When Rockstar low key revealed that it was working on a sequel to the infinitely praised 2010 title Red Dead Redemption through social media last fall, fans were ecstatic with the possibilities. The story that followed John Marston’s legendary tale of vengeance compelled players for hundreds of hours on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and the world of gaming has busted the doors wide open in regards to what is possible just seven years later.
The first trailer simply showed off the sequel’s environment and game engine to give players a small taste in how the world of Red Dead has evolved, but no indication of anything in the months following. No hint of a PC version, no hint of story or characters, or indication of a remaster of Redemption like the recently announced L.A. Noir.
This morning we have a trailer revealing some of the game’s story elements, main characters and presentation value. The game’s story follows that of an outlaw, Arthur Morgan, and the Van der Linde gang as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive. The trailer only reveals a small amount of characterization of Morgan, but it seems he may be a more traditional anti-hero character than found in Redemption’s iconic vigilante protagonist.
The remaining factor that fans await to see from Red Dead Redemption 2, and by far the most important, is the gameplay. We have yet to see if the sequel will mechanically function like the first, like Grand Theft Auto V or something in a league of it’s own. Not to mention, the multiplayer of the first game was iconic in it’s innovation, paving the way for a lot of features that would later be worked on in GTA Online in 2013 and onward.
The game is set for release in Spring 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One systems.
