Despite having a somewhat lackluster season so far, it’s hard not to be a little excited that The CW has officially picked up Reign for a third season, despite flagging rating and a move to Friday nights. To be fair, they also picked up literally everything else that they’re currently airing, but fans will take what we can get. This means that the loosely historical series will be back for a fourth season, though there’s no word yet on when it will air or the episode count.
The renewal news comes as even more as a shock as it is following on the heels that one of the shows major players (though less so recently) is on his way out. Torrance Coombs announced earlier that this week that he was headed for Shonda Rhime’s newest pilot, “Still Star-Crossed.” Of course, a series pickup is never guarenteed, but ABC turning down anything new from Shondaland seems unlikely. Coombs took to Twitter this week to suggest that this doesn’t mean the last of Bash, but it’s easy to see why he might be ready to move on to bigger and better things since his character has been underutilized recently. There’s also the chance that Queen Mary will be taking off for Scotland at the end of this season, closing the door on the French chapter of her life, meaning most of the current cast could be close to announcing their departures as well.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Season three isn’t done yet and with eight episodes left there is still room for all sorts of drama. Reign returns April 25, 8/7c on The CW.
