In this episode, Daya finally goes into labor. While this happens, Daya wants her mother far away from her. Aleida is naturally sad that her own daughter doesn’t want to be near her, but she’s the one who pushed her daughter away in the first place. I don’t like Aleida at all, and not even seeing her story did anything to change that opinion. She’s someone who likes starting drama and not taking responsibility for her own actions.
Poor Sophia ends up getting jumped by several women. Caputo and Pearson become concerned for Sophia’s safety. However, they can’t do anything to protect her, so they just send her to the SHU. This makes both Caputo and Pearson upset that they can’t do anything about this, so they take a trip and have an informal meeting with Pearson’s father. He tells them that the prison can’t do anything about it and it’s just an unfortunate situation. Pearson is fed up with not being able to make decisions to make the prison a better place, so he quits and Caputo takes his job.
Piper is struggling with her business and realizes that she isn’t as in control of the business as she thought. Her babyface guard no longer wants to risk smuggling the panties, but Stella convinces him to stay in the business because it’s the best thing that has ever happened to him. Meanwhile, we get two rather pointless scenes with Piper’s brother Cal and his wife making and selling their own panties that they pass off as being worn by prisoners. There’s really no need for this scene other than showing that the business is going under even more.
Big Boo tells Pennsatucky that they have to punish Coates on their own terms, since Caputo isn’t going to do anything. I think this says a lot about the prison system as a whole and how they fail in terms of proper punishment. Big Boo tells her that they should go all Girl With the Dragon Tattoo on him and rape him. They drug him and pull his pants down and Boo hands her a broom. Pennsatucky realizes that she isn’t angry, she’s just sad. This confession is heartbreaking and so real. I just love the friendship between the two of them.
The flashback just confirms what we already know: Aleida constantly abandons her duty as a mother to Daya. She wants a better life for Daya than what she had. She’s also slowly realizing that it’s likely her daughter is just going to end up like her. She ends up calling Pornstache’s mother and telling her that Daya miscarried and lost the little boy. We then see that Daya is just fine and holding her healthy baby girl. It’s sad that Daya is all by herself delivering her baby, but it’s also what she needs.

The episode as a whole revolves around the theme of mothers. Taystee accepts the fact that she is now the new Vee and is the mother of her girls. I think that Taystee is definitely the reasonable and mature one of the group, so this is a fitting role for her. This was a good episode despite some boring moments scattered throughout.
