Earlier today, MTV premiered the second trailer for the Scream TV series. This adaptation, based on the iconic slasher movie franchise of the same name, will not be following main characters Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Dewey Riley (David Arquette), or Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). Instead, a new group of teens is being terrorized by a masked serial killer in the town of Lakewood—a town that is decidedly not Woodsboro.
Scream finds the town of Lakewood attempting to cope with the loss of first victim Nina Patterson (Bella Thorne) and an increasing paranoia as the killer eludes capture. Check out the trailer here:
This trailer isn’t without some nods to the original—they’ve got the most recognizable actor playing the first victim (Bella Thorne’s Nina, much like Drew Barrymore’s Casey Becker; Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) being phone-stalked a la Sidney; a Randy-esque horror fanatic spelling out rules of the genre for his class (though not as charming in execution as Jamie Kennedy); and a questionable romantic interest for Emma in Kieran (Amadeus Serafini), who looks like he aspires to have just as many hair gel issues as Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). The second trailer also offers more sneak peeks at the killer now that the new mask (pictured above) has been revealed.
All of this might be promising, but I’m still skeptical—I don’t have complete confidence that a slasher story can be carried out through a TV show. Also, nods aside, I’m still not entirely sure about why this had to be called Scream besides the hope that some Scream film fans will watch. I’m sure I’ll be saying that a lot, but we’ll have to wait until the series premiere on June 30th to be sure.
