SpongeBob SquarePants is considered a big childhood staple for us. This clever little sponge who lived in a pineapple under the sea made us laugh and taught us many important life lessons. It’s good to know that SpongeBob is still around to entertain a new generation of kids.

With its new movie hitting the big screen in a few weeks, we decided to share our favorite SpongeBob SquarePants episodes and moments. Click through the slideshow to relive some classic and hilarious moments.

As an extra bonus, we are also giving away tickets to the New York City movie premiere of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge Out of Water on January 31st!

“Sailor Mouth”

SpongeBob SquarePants, like most great children’s entertainment, is not merely for kids (or at least in its prime it wasn’t). There were occasional life lessons and a lot of silly humor, but there were also plenty of adult jokes and storylines that taught kids how to appreciate a grown-up type of humor before they could even really understand it.

“Sailor Mouth” is a prime example. In it, SpongeBob and Patrick learn bad words from reading dumpster graffiti and, believing them to be “sentence enhancers,” begin using them freely. The words are, obviously, censored, but you still get gems like, “Don’t forget to ask us to *beep* the *beep* fries.” It’s dirty, yes, but it’s subtle enough to be harmless and actually carries an anti-swearing message.

Of course, that didn’t stop media watchdog groups (often the same people who criticized SpongeBob for supposedly being a gay character) from speaking out against the episode. Parents Television Council claimed that the episode encouraged swearing, while Nickelodeon hilariously responded, “It’s sad and a little desperate that they stooped to literally putting profane language in the mouths of our characters to make a point.”

Beyond being a wonderful piece of satire that, like a lot of great satire, was painfully misinterpreted, “Sailor Mouth” is easily the funniest episode of the series, with many quotable lines (“There are 13 bad words you should never use.” “Don’t you mean there are only 7?” “Not if you’re a sailor.”) and an original story that carries a message all kids should hear. After all, to quote Patrick Star, “Classy sophisticates like us should not stain our lips with cursing.”

My favorite SpongeBob episode/moment is when SpongeBob goes to visit Sandy at her house, which happens to be an underwater dome. Obviously, he’s a sponge and needs water to survive, but to be polite, he denies her whenever she asks if he wants any H2O. I don’t know why I just love it so much. It makes me literally laugh out loud every time!

[tps_title]Evan Griffin’s Favorite SpongeBob SquarePants Episodes[/tps_title]

When SpongeBob first came on the air, I was maybe 10 years old, and it was pretty much my entire life for three to four years, at least until after the movie came out in 2004. But among those first three seasons between 1999 and 2004 were some of the greatest moments in not just animation, but in comedy. Period. I can’t pick just one, so here’s a mouthful of delicious Krabby goodness. In those years, my friends and I would, I kid you not, somehow remember the entirety of the episodes from that recent Friday/Saturday and reenact them for friends on the playground that Monday, so some episodes, possibly even these three, I could recite the entire 11 minutes of even at the age of 23. Anyway, here they are.

“Band Geeks”

Most will list this, mainly for the 80’s ballad at the end of the episode, “Sweet Victory,” but I also list it because the majority of Bikini Bottom “banded” together to help Squidward achieve his dream in vanquishing his rival, and everyone gets a hysterical moment here. Everyone.

“Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III”

SpongeBob and Patrick are asked to guard the superheros’ hidden lair while they’re out. Nothing could go wrong, right? Only the best worst thing ever, where the lovably gullible two accidentally unfreeze the villain, Man Ray, from his Tartar Sauce prison, who convinces them he wants to learn how to be “good,” eventually learning the error of his ways with the phantom pain of the Tickle Belt, and buying checks… with little poodles on them.

“Krusty Krab Training Video”

This episode’s tone is different from the rest because it feels so uncannily real, and only becomes even more so when you’re a teenager or adult who has sat through these exact kinds of training videos.

Oh, right, and any time Fred says “My Leg.”

My favorite moment was when SpongeBob couldn’t write his essay for the driving test!

One of my favorite moments was when Squidward and his band performed at the bubble bowl.

My personal favorite is “Band Geeks.” The song at the end is simply amazing. So amazing, in fact, that I searched far and wide for the full length version to put on my most prized mixed CD of my car’s entire collection. I pity David Glen Eisly for really only being known for this one song that has embedded itself into cartoon pop culture. Nevertheless, I thank him with all my heart. There aren’t many songs that I will shamelessly jam to as hard as I rock out to “Sweet Victory.”

Here’s the full song:

And here’s the clip:

Another pick would be “Texas,” the episode where Sandy makes plans to return home. I can’t resist asking if everything from Texas is dumb whenever somebody brings up the state in conversation. Never gets old.
