[tps_title]Gabrielle Bondi’s Top 10 TV Shows of 2014[/tps_title]
2014 has been an amazing year for television. It seems like every year the medium gets bigger and better, which is cool until I feel so overwhelmed by all the greatness offered. I can’t say I’ve seen all of the shows, but of the ones I’ve seen, I found the shows listed below to be the best and my favorites.
- Jane the Virgin (Season 1) – When I first saw the promos for Jane the Virgin, I was easy to dismiss it as another cliched drama that just propelled more stereotypes of Latina women. I was so surprised to find out this show actually does the opposite. People aren’t kidding when they say that Jane is one of the most wonderful shows on TV.
- Outlander (Season 1a) – As a fan of the book series, I was already anticipating the premiere of Outlander on Starz. The show still surpassed my expectations. Caitriona Balfe beautifully plays Claire, a woman who “falls through time” from the 20th Century to 18th century Scotland. It’s refreshing to see a TV show filmed entirely from a female’s perspective. That “Wedding” episode will go down in TV history as one of the sexiest things ever.
- Orphan Black (Season 2) – Tatiana Maslany is God. No, really. Plot-wise, Orphan Black is an entertaining and smart show, but it’s Maslany’s riveting performanceS that keep you invested in these clones and their complicated situations.
- True Detective (Season 1) – Lots of accolades go to Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey for their incredible work in True Detective, but what really made True Detective so arresting was Cary Joji Fukunaga’s impeccable direction.
- Game of Thrones (Season 4) – If there’s ever anything you can call “event television,” it’s every Sunday night when a new Game of Thrones episode is on. This past season was definitely that. The end of each episode had me staring at the screen blankly, going WTF (in a good way).
- Homeland (Season 4) – At the beginning of the season, I was doubtful that Homeland could remake itself. By the end, I was proven wrong. The show is still as heart-attack-inducing as ever.
- The Affair (Season 1) – Another surprise for me was The Affair. Most of the credit goes to Ruth Wilson, who plays one of the most fascinating female characters on TV.
- Silicon Valley (Season 1) – The season finale had me bursting a gut with laughter. It executes one of the most brilliant sitcom jokes ever.
- Penny Dreadful (Season 1) – This show is dark, lush, and twisted, and you know Eva Green embraces every bit of that and more.
- Hannibal (Season 2) – Oh, Hannibal. Season Two stepped up its game and led to a finale that I still can’t believe happened. I’m afraid to see what showrunner Bryan Fuller has in store for us next.
Honorable Mentions: Downton Abbey, The Bridge, You’re The Worst, and The Mindy Project.
