We all know that DC Comics has been all over the blogs recently, and let’s be honest, almost none of it has been favorable. Ben Affleck and Batwoman comic book fiascoes aside, there is a bright light keeping DC from fading to black, and it’s making us see green.
The Green Arrow comic book inspired tv show Arrow has been one of the few saving-graces DC has had recently, and now with the infusion of super-powered characters (like Black Canary and Bronze Tiger) that are expected to appear this season it can only get better! I know you’re still reeling from the loss (for now at least) of John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Torchwood), but your geek heart is already mended when you see that Summer Glau (Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) has joined the cast as new villain Isabel Rochev. But wait, there’s more! We all know that many of these shows and movies based on our favorite comics often give us little Easter eggs by introducing a character with the same name as the alteregoes of super-heroes or villains. Sometimes they develop the character more later, but sometimes that’s the last we see of them, leaving us to assume what becomes of them. We’ve already seen this a couple of times in Arrow, and we are going to see it again, except this time something is going to come of it.
We will be introduced to Barry Allen in the form of Glee regular Grant Gustin this season. Don’t have any idea who that is? Shame on you. Bad fanboys and girls! Barry Allen is better know as speedster The Flash. I’m excited for them to stop trying to explain people’s super powers as purely science based in an attempt to give the show a more grounded-in-our-reality type feel. Nothing pisses off fans more than that, but we swallow our pride and try to enjoy any interpretation of our favorite comics that we can get. More than likely this decision came when they realized they would have to compete with full-blown, super-power filled show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but either way it has me excited. Apparently I’m not the only one excited since there are plans to turn the not-yet-introduced Flash into its own spin-off show. That’s means not long after the Flash is introduced into Arrow and given his back story, there will be a rush in putting together a spin-off show. Why the rush? Well aside from witches, superheroes are back in style. So instead of trying to bring Wonder Woman to any size screen (like they’ve been trying to do for the past 5 years), they decide its easier to speed up a production of the Flash, a person who can run at super-speeds, and even fast enough to travel through solid objects or through time. My distaste for how underrepresented (in television and film) heroines are aside, I am still more than looking forward to having another of my favorite heroes on television.
DC has been hard at work with more shows in the works. Fox recently picked up a new detective drama based on the Gotham City cases worked by James Gordon (best known as Commissioner Gordon) before Batman ever showed up. Gotham will more than likely keep the gritty, realistic styling of the Batman-Nolan universe, but for now that is only speculation. Also, most fans know that Gordon spent his early years in Chicago and really only became prominent in Gotham City around the time Batman appeared. Don’t expect an explanation from the show for this change.
Hero talk aside, let’s talk about villains, and who better to talk about than America’s most beloved villain, Walter White. I know, Breaking Bad ended several weeks ago, but that hasn’t kept everyone from continuing to talk about it. It should come as no surprise that the show has reached global fame, more specifically Spain. If the title Metástasis doesn’t sound familiar to you, then you will be excited to know that now you will be able to enjoy Breaking Bad in Spanish. Sure, looking at the trailer it looks like a scene-by-scene parody, but rest assured it will be a serious thing, despite the protagonist’s name now being Walter Blanco. ‘Blanco’ is Spanish for ‘White’. Does anyone know if meth is even available in Spain?

Now I know all this talk of tv shows and comics have your fingers itching for some video games, so here is a bit of nostalgia that will quench your appetites. Most of you will remember Super Mario Bros. as the first game that got you hooked onto the addicting world that is gaming. Well now you can play it anytime, anywhere from the comfort of your computer screen. Believe me, I was doing it already through an emulator too, but now you can create your own levels. GET TO IT!
