After six long years of silence, Whose Line Is It Anyway? is finally back on television. The improvisation sensation returns for its ninth season, this time airing on The CW. Wayne Brady, Colin Mochrie, and Ryan Stiles all return to poke fun at one another in a slew of games and comedic skits. The show returns, however, with new host Aisha Tyler. Some might know her from ‘The Talk’ (a talk show on CBS) or others, like myself, might recognize her as the voice of Lana Kane from the animated sitcom ‘Archer.’ So the I’m sure the question on everyone’s mind whether or not they will like the new season if they have watched the show in the past. Chances are that if you liked the original, you’ll find a happy spot on your couch every Tuesday night at 8/7c.
The cast is familiar and refreshing. It’s great to see the gang back on stage again, almost as if they had never even left in the first place. The games are just as good as they used to be; old favorites like Scenes From a Hat and Let’s Make a Date return and are, well, pretty much the exact same. One new standout skit was entitled Sideways Scene, in which the cast lays on the floor with a camera pointed at them from the ceiling. They then attempt to act out a scene as if gravity were shifted sideways, so it looks normal from the above perspective. Somewhat confusing to describe, but definitely worth a look!
Whose Line was and continues to be one of my favorite shows and without a doubt my favorite comedy on television. It’s almost the exact same as the original with the same great cast and unique improv games. New celebrity guest stars also make the show fresh to Whose Line newbies, with the premiere starring Lauren Cohan from The Walking Dead and Kevin McHale from Glee. Season 9 is off to a solid start and here’s to hoping it can only get better from here. You can watch the season premiere online right here. Whose Line Is It Anyway? airs at 8pm/7pm central on the CW.
