The cast and producers of FXX’s ‘Dave’ chat about Season 1

Deadline

On June 23, the cast and crew of FXX’s hit comedy Dave hopped into Deadline’s Virtual House screening room to chat all about the show. The discussion took place after a screening of the season one episode “Ally’s Toast.” The panel consisted of Dave co-creator and actor Dave Burd, co-creator-executive producer-writer Jeff Schaffer, executive producer and writer Saladin Patterson, and cast members Taylor Misiak (who plays Ally) and GaTa.

Dave is based on the life of rapper Dave Burd, widely known as Lil Dicky, who’s convinced he’s a rapper with great potential. With his friends’ help, Dave goes against all the odds to prove to everyone he’s got what it takes.

When it came to the making of the show, Burd didn’t know exactly where to start. He just knew he was capable of making one of the best shows on television. “I didn’t want to just make a good show. I wanted to make a great show that really rocked the culture. I’m also aware that I have no idea what I’m doing.” This is how Jeff Schaffer (Curb Your Enthusiasm) came into the picture.

Schaffer continues the story, saying, “I knew who Dave Burd was, Lil Dicky, the internet is 60% porn, 20% Lil Dicky videos and 20% clickbait. I didn’t know if I’d like him until he started telling stories, and the way he told stories was like Curb stories.”

Rounding out his story, Dave finishes, “My desire was to make a tv show that felt real, funny, and emotional depth to it. Make people feel a ton of different ways when they watch it. […] I think we succeeded.”

Arguably, one of the many stand out episodes from season one was episode five, “Hype Man.” The show perfectly captures GaTa’s background story, where in the end viewers discover he’s bipolar. “Dicky came up to me one day and asked if I could share [my story]. At first, I was against it because of the stigma. I wasn’t thinking of the bigger picture, the world. People in the industry are gonna think I’m crazy or not work with me.”

GaTa continues, saying, “I had a great support system around me. […] A man’s job is to look tough. […] So for me to just break down like that, I think we just changed the game.”

Another quirk to the show is the guest stars. Dave was most excited about Young Thug. “I hate to pick favorites, but I can’t lie. I’m such a Young Thug fan. Prior to that, I didn’t think he knew I existed.” GaTa chimes in, “That’s like having the modern-day Lil’ Wayne. […] You gotta pat your self on the back for that one.”

Fans would be happy to know, Dave is coming back for a second season in 2021 with even greater storylines and hopefully more celebrity cameos.

Dave season one is currently streaming on Hulu.
