The ladies of The Bold Type are back for season two and they’re tackling deeper issues, including female empowerment, LGBTQ representation, and most importantly, the power of friendship.
Fans of the show got a sneak peek of the season two premiere in Austin, Texas and the ATX Television Festival where stars Aisha Dee (Kat Edison), Meghann Fahy (Sutton Brady), Nikohl Boosheri (Adina El Amin) and The Bold Type’s new showrunner, Amanda Lasher, spoke afterwards about what fans can expect from the rest of the season.
“For me, it was really just continuing the things that everybody loved and responded to on the show, which was these female friendships and seeing women support each other and not pitting women against each other,” Lasher said.
Season two brings a new batch of drama for the ladies of Scarlett, well, now Incite (hi Jane!). While they have new issues to tackle, the panel discussed that the girls’ strong bond will help get them through whatever the world throws their way.
“Sometimes women are pitted against each other,” Fahy said. “One of the really important stories we’re trying to tell on the show is that you can lift someone else up and also lift yourself up.”
This correlates with what her character Sutton is experiencing at Scarlett. She has been in the fashion department for a while now and slowly moving up the ranks. However, other women in her department think she’s only getting her opportunities because she’s sleeping with someone she’s not. Sutton gets to a point where she has to choose whether she wants to put her career before her love life. It’s a struggle many women face in the workforce today.
Lasher also touched on Kat and Adina’s relationship and how the show will explore it on a deeper level this season. The panel discussed how important it was for them to portray a positive and authentic LGBTQ relationship.
Boosheri spoke about how she and Dee talked from the beginning about their characters’ relationship so they can make sure they portray real life as closely as they can so it feels authentic to the fans.

“[Boosheri and I] both really felt the responsibility of that and really care a lot,” Dee said.
Even though Katie Stevens, who plays Jane Sloan, was not at the panel, Lasher discussed her character’s development in the upcoming season following Jane’s departure from Scarlett.
For Jane, Lasher said she was used to having a fabulous boss who would listen and push her to be her best while still lifting her up. At Incite, she gets a different type of boss and the writers wanted to challenge Jane and see how she reacts to a new and foreign environment that is the opposite of what she had at Scarlett.
When asked if Jane would ever return to Scarlett (since we all want that to happen), Lasher said, “One can always go back to places that mean something to us, but we have to find our way back and it’s not always so easy.”

The Bold Type season two premiered on June 12 on Freeform.
