From Juliette running off to Bolivia to Will dealing with his steroid doping to everything going on within the Deacon-Jessie clan, it’s a miracle the city of Nashville hasn’t burned to the ground.
We have to start off with what’s become of Juliette. This once confident and strong female heroine has become a shadow of her former self. Not only does Avery fly to Bolivia to try and bring her home, but she says she’s not leaving. It’s infuriating to watch one of the show’s former leads being shoved aside and made a secondary character. Worse, she’s a secondary character that doesn’t even have depth.
What Juliette needs is to not separate herself like she said. She needs to be at home with her child, whom she’s neglected the entire time she’s existed on the show, and get back to who she was. All of this drama she’s produced over the season has led Avery to finally call it quits once and for all. After the drinking, rehab, suicide attempt, and now the stay in Bolivia, he can’t handle Juliette anymore, and I don’t blame him. It’s sad it has come to this, because Juliette is what made Avery so great as a character. It’s sad he can’t make her great too.
Ironically, while Will is attempting to push Alana away in the band, she is getting closer to Avery to help him deal with Juliette. She is a secondary character with more depth than would have originally thought. Definitely more depth than Juliette at the moment. Alana tells him about her past relationship where she was constantly cheated on, but she couldn’t end things. She was ashamed for allowing herself to be treated that way, similar to how Juliette is with Avery. Maybe she can finally be the one to get Avery to see things clearly in his relationship.
Speaking of the band, Will continues to struggle with his image and his purpose as he continues to take steroids, leading to his demise. The Highways get a shot to sing on The Chew and Will takes it as his moment to shine. Leading up to it, he works out constantly but continues to decline. It’s not until they’re in the middle of the set on television that he passes out and becomes unresponsive.
Will is another character who used to be confident and exude swagger but has now become a heap of depression. Nashville has always been a drama, but these last few seasons they’ve definitely played it up to the point where no one can apparently be happy.
However, we do have Daphne. She’s become a happier person, probably for the first time in the last three seasons. During a school talent show, Jessie’s awful ex-husband, Brad, tells Daphne she should be on a real stage, which leads her to try out for his singing competition, Nashville’s Next Country Star.
Of course, there’s tension between Deacon and Brad already, but Deacon is against Daphne doing it because he says she needs to figure out who she is as an artist first before others decide. Well, Daphne being Daphne tries out and actually makes the competition. Deacon warns her that Brad will exploit her for who her family is, but he does ultimately tell her that he will stand beside her and protect her throughout.

Who won’t be protected is Deacon. In the middle of the debacle that is Brad exploiting Daphne, Brad is forcing his and Jessie’s son, Jake, to go to boarding school. When Jake says he won’t leave, Brad goes after him and Deacon steps in and pushes Brad off the 13-year-old. Of course, because this is Nashville and Brad is an awful human being, he will most likely go after Deacon for assault when all he was doing was protecting Jake.
It’s a good thing Nashville has a four-month hiatus before it returns in June for the final episodes of the series. Maybe within that time the writers will be able to regroup and finish as strong as they started, because the drama, doping, and disappearance of Juliette storyline has got to end.
