It’s time for An-i-man-i-acs….again!
Hulu announced on Thursday the return of Animaniacs, the treasured 90s slapstick cartoon. The streaming giant ordered two seasons straight to series in collaboration with the show’s masterminds, Warner Bros. Animation and Amblin Television. Steven Spielberg, Amblin’s founder, will return as executive producer of the show as he was with other beloved 90s cartoons including Freakazoid!, Tiny Toon Adventures and Pinky and the Brain. Hulu also added that as of today, subscribers to Hulu can watch all 99 episodes of Animaniacs along with Tiny Toon Adventures, Pinky and the Brain and the spin-off Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain.
“We cannot wait to work with Steven Spielberg and the entire Amblin and Warner Bros. teams to bring more sketches, catchphrases, songs and laughs from the Animaniacs to kids and adults everywhere,” said Craig Erwich, SVP of Content for Hulu in an official Press Release from Hulu. “Now one of the most beloved, inventive and funny animated franchises in history, Animaniacs and its cast of witty characters can live on, on Hulu. This marks yet another big move for us as we continue our efforts to be the #1 streaming destination for premium animated content.”

The Peabody and Emmy award-winning cartoon that ran from 1993 to 1998 follows the antics of Wakko, Yakko and Dot who lived in the tower on the Warner Bros. lot. The trio would bounce and zip through adventures featuring pop culture references, sly adult humor and even occasional geographical knowledge. The show, like Tiny Toons before it, thrived on the wacky animation style of classic WB cartoons beefed up for 90s TV and the frequent ribbing of Hollywood life being as silly as what’s in the funnies on newspapers.
Hulu is hyping up Animaniacs‘ return as the show’s first original series for families, while their previous original content has included the very adult-oriented The Handmaid’s Tale, The Path and Difficult People. Recently, Hulu has been putting out original content for the younger, nerd culture friendly crowd such as the Seth Rogen-produced Future Man and the Marvel-backed Runaways. While Animaniacs had a recent run on Netflix, the presence on Hulu would definitely help the site’s ongoing war with the big red N as the show is still only in DVD format. Though no word has been made if the original voice cast, including Rob Paulsen, Tress MacNeille and Jess Harnell who voiced the three title characters, will be back to voice the leads again.
“I am so pleased and proud that Animaniacs will have a home at Hulu,” said Spielberg in the press release. “Together with Warner Bros., we look to bring new audiences and longtime fans into this wild world of Yakko, Wakko, and Dot. I am also excited that the full library of Animaniacs and Tiny Toon Adventures episodes are included in the deal.”
