Supernatural: 5 Reasons To Be Excited For Season 13

Though some say Supernatural has runs its course, it’s time for the show to turn thirteen. (I am not one of those “some” — season eleven remains my favorite season of the latter half of Supernatural, and quite possibly, the whole of the show). Season twelve didn’t quite capitalize on the surge of creativity brought forth during season eleven, but it was still an entertaining, if at times, stagnant, season. But that’s in the past. Here are five things to look forward to in the upcoming season!

Scooby-Doo/Supernatural Crossover Animated Episode

The Supernatural/Scooby-Doo crossover was announced earlier this year, and it’s been the thing I’m most looking forward to for season thirteen. Not only is the idea intriguing, the episode is proof the showrunners are willing to stretch the limits of creativity to keep the show lively. Thirteen seasons in, and it’s easy to rehash old story beats, but even though Supernatural has had its fair amount of stumbles, they are finding ways to show us they still have good stories they want tell. Plus, Scooby-Doo is a classic — it’ll be cool to see those iconic cartoon detectives team up with the brothers.

Jack

Despite a major plot line last season revolving around preventing the birth of Lucifer’s son, Jack was always going to be born. It’s the old Hitchcock saying — introduce a gun, it better be going off somewhere down the line. What interests me about Jack, and the reason he’s on the list, is the potential he has to be a dynamic character. The nature of good and evil is often thrown for a loop on Supernatural. Crowley’s a demon, but he’s been a regular since season six and has helped the Winchesters on multiple occasions. Sam and Dean have both had their fair share of walks on the dark side, not to mention the numerous benevolent supernatural creatures the brothers have come across over the years. Jack being a nephilim, as well as Lucifer’s son, could spell some heavy forays into discussing the nature of good and evil. All of which, no doubt, will include Sam and Dean taking opposing sides on the matter.

“New Sheriff in Town”

Crowley’s gone (RIP), and Lucifer’s in the apocalyptic world (that guy always seems to be getting stuck somewhere), which means hell is left unattended. Or it was, until this mysterious man in white claims he’s the “new sheriff in town.” This guy seems to be coming out of left field, which is why I’m excited to see where this goes. Whoever he is, he’s dressed in white, something that’s all too familiar if we flash back to season five and Jared Padalecki dressed in a similar get up. Whether that implies another angel has come to fill in Lucifer’s shoes, or he’s something else entirely, hopefully he can bring some life back to hell and the force of evil it should be.

Chuck…er, God

Alright, so this one is more of a wishful thinking than any actual confirmation that Rob Benedict is returning as Chuck/God. But in the season thirteen trailer, Dean can be heard praying to Chuck for some help. Considering Sam and Dean now find themselves taking care of a teenager who brings a whole new meaning to “teenage angst,” a reappearance by Chuck would make sense. And anyway, Castiel needs to be revived somehow, since Misha Collins will be returning by at least the Scooby-Doo episode, and Chuck has saved Cas before. However, and I’ve mentioned this before, the use of Benedict as Chuck/God has to be handled delicately — too much of him, and he becomes an even more literal deus ex machina than he already is.

The Apocalypse World and the Return of Past Characters

Why it’s taken this long for Missouri Moseley to return, I have no idea. Having been a one-off character way back in season one, Missouri Moseley is easily one of the best guest characters on the show. Her return will certainly be interesting, and her psychic powers no doubt will be put to some use. And it’s not just Missouri’s return to look for — the apocalypse world introduced last season will be an opportunity for other characters to return, albeit slightly different versions of once beloved characters. Bobby’s already made an appearance because of the alternate world, but what about Ellen and Jo? Ash? Gabriel? Death has never meant all that much in the world of Supernatural, but if we’re thirteen seasons in, I say anything’s fair game at this point.

Supernatural returns October 12 at 8/7c on The CW. I’ll be here covering all of season thirteen, and all the ups and downs that will surely come with it. Feel free to join the discussion in the comment section, and I’ll see you next week with a review of the premiere episode, “Lost and Found.”
