We’re back with another edition of “For Your Consideration”! This time, it’s all about Andi Mack. She’s a middle school girl just living her life. Oh, and this is on Disney Channel, so if you’re a 20-something year old sitting there thinking, “Why the hell would I watch Disney Channel? Don’t they have a show about a dog writing a blog?” We’re going to stop you right there. Don’t knock it before you try it. The catch to Andi Mack? Turns out most of her life was a lie. In the first episode, Andi (newcomer Peyton Elizabeth Lee) finds out her mom isn’t actually her mom. Her sister is her mom. SAY WHAT?
The Premise
Although I just gave you a bit of the premise, there are more surrounding factors to this story. All of Andi’s life, she believed Ham & Celia Mack (Stoney Westmoreland & Lauren Tom) were her birth parents. That is, until her “older sister” Bex (Lilian Bowden) pops in unexpectedly one day and reveals that she is the real birth mother. So now, Andi is transitioning into this new norm all while Celia and Bex bicker back and forth on the “proper way” to raise Andi.
Back at middle school, Andi has the support of her two best friends Buffy Driscoll (Sofia Wylie) and Cyrus Goodman (Joshua Rush) who are pretty much in the know about everything. And what’s a middle school without a crush? We’re looking to you, Jonah Beck (Asher Angel).
Thus, we now follow Andi’s adventures as she’s still soaking in this new information, dealing with Jonah’s jealous girlfriend, and finally meeting her real birth father as well in the process!
Why You Should Watch
What, that didn’t catch your attention enough? It sure caught ours in the first 30-minute episode. How unreal is it for a story like this, fronted by an Asian American cast, does this appear on television? Considering this is from the same minds behind Lizzie McGuire (AKA one of the best Disney shows ever), we are so glad to see this kind of content on our small screens.
Sure, it may not relate to everyone, but it’s a story worth knowing. Growing up in middle school isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be like is shown in any other middle school-centric TV show. Sure, there’s a bully, but the way Andi handles herself on screen to defend and stick up for herself is damn mature for her age.
It’s middle school in the 21st century. This show embodies what it’s like to have real friendships while growing up and while also showing the alternate and mature way to handle sticky situations. Just in the last episode of the past season alone, Andi stood up to Jonah from being jerked around left and right just because she was swooning over him. She realized in herself that she’s better than that. Wise beyond her years. No pettiness here.
And, just stay stuned for season two! They just pushed out a sneak peek of an episode and the Jonah/Andi love story continues!!!

But we’re all still wondering if Cyrus will ever reveal his true feelings to Jonah. Don’t get it? You just have to watch it!
