You’d think that after creating the longest running cartoon in the history of television with The Simpsons, and a hilarious futuristic space romp in Futurama, cartoonist and creator Matt Groening would have had his fill of original programs for the next forever and a half. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth, as it appears Netflix has found another creative mind to add original ideas to their already vast wealth of innovative programming. This time, in the form of Groening’s sharp wit and animated talents.
Groening recently revealed his latest animated project, Disenchantment, a comedy/fantasy epic set in the dilapidated medieval kingdom of Dreamland. At the center of the action are a trio of medieval characters, the hard-drinker princess Bean, (Abbi Jacobson), her elf friend, Elfo (Nat Faxon), and her personal demon Luci (Eric Andre). Keeping the narrative details scarce, Groening was quoted as describing the upcoming show like this: “Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”
And Groening isn’t alone in the transition to Netflix. Veteran actors Billy West, Joe DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche and Tress MacNeille, who voiced some of Futurama‘s most recognizable characters, are set to return as voices for additional characters. In addition, Rough Draft Studios, the same team behind the animation of Futurama, are set to be drawing this series as well. It appears that even Groening hasn’t completely lost the fever of Futurama’s second coming, despite its latest cancellation is 2013. Disenchantment is currently slated to release sometime in 2018, and will be exclusive to the streaming platform Netflix.
