Once again Simon’s life is falling apart. He lost his girlfriend, got framed for murder, and killed a fellow vampire. A good thing about his newfound relationship status is that he stuck to his guns, showing and saying that he needed space from Clary. He didn’t fall into the stereotypical young adult trope where one person apologizes and immediately gets forgiven. It was surprising that Simon took it upon himself to track Quinn down and confront him. The old Simon would’ve never done something like that. Not to mention that he actually killed Quinn in self defense. This episode didn’t show how that’s affected him, but it must’ve changed something about Simon. Taking a life is not simply something he’d do. We’ll have to wait and see what he does next.
On the other side of this relationship was Clary, and it was good that she was determined for Simon to forgive her. Of course, their relationship couldn’t be fixed overnight, but she showed that she’s not willing to give up on her best friend. Hopefully, she realizes that she has feelings for Jace and leaves poor Simon’s emotions alone.
On the subject of emotions, we got a small but powerful moment from Magnus. He’s been going through a lot these past few episodes and one of these events was bound to come back and haunt him. It turned out that it was the torture. Magnus disclosed to Alec that when he was younger, he killed his step father. After being blamed and called an abomination, all his anger came out and he burned the man alive. What made that scene so deep was that it was eating away at him. Magnus has lived for a very long time, but even he can’t escape emotional trauma.
Sebastian had to be the biggest part of this episode. First off, he’s not even the real Sebastian! Turns out the person that he had tied up was the real Sebastian. The fake one had been wearing his face for his own purposes, but why? The Fake Sebastian has been a real mystery this season because his intentions still aren’t clear. For example, why be Sebastian, and why keep him alive for as long as he did? Also, did he infiltrate The Institute simply to get to Valentine, or is there more to it? Let’s not forget that he looks like he has third degree burns all over his body and he has black eyes, which indicates that he’s either a demon, or he has demon blood, but that doesn’t make sense because he claims to be Valentine’s son and Valentine hates demons. Who is this guy?
