TV Review: The Bold Type Series Premiere

As we all officially came to terms that Pretty Little Liars will no longer be on our small screens making us anxious, annoyed, pissed off, and confused all at once, I think we’re just about ready to have a new series enter our lives. When one chapter ends, another one begins and we’re not talking about PLL Part 2. It’s about time we have a more lighthearted show enter our lives. That’s where The Bold Type comes in.

You’re probably familiar with the one scene that is just circulating the web of three girls pretty much screaming into a subway. Yes, that’s the one. Well, to go into detail, the show stars three millennial best friends navigating their career and life in one of the most cut throat industries portrayed on the big or small screen: working for a global women’s magazine, Scarlet. You have Jane (Katie Stevens), newly promoted writer working on making taking that big leap from an assistant to prove her worth; Kat (Aisha Dee), the social media director of Scarlet who will forever fight for what she stands for; and Sutton (Meghann Fahy), the Editor in Chief’s assistant who longs to be seen as more than that. Melora Hardin portrays Jacqueline, the Editor in Chief who everyone aims to please.

For anyone who has ever watched – or even known – about the following: The Devil Wears Prada, Gossip Girl, The Carrie Diaries, and Ugly Betty, then you will be here for this. It’s a mixture of our favorite shows put into one with a dash of a much more social networking influence (Snapchat gets mentioned at least 5 times in the first episode). It’s obvious that social media is the norm for all our lives, so it’s a given that it would be embedded into this show as well.

As cliche as it may sound, watching this show was refreshing. This is the exact type of young adult show I lived for when I was younger and up to this day, I continue to search for series that fit the bill. This is it. It’s every bit of quirky to comedic, with amazing female representation of friendship and women’s strength in the workforce (especially when the majority of the board members in this show are men). It pushes the boundaries just enough. It makes clear sense why it’s called The Bold Type. It is bold for taking a step into a passé portrayed workforce industry. I don’t know about you, but as someone who grew up reading Teen Vogue or NYLON, it may not be up to par with what really happens, but it seems damn close.

I’m excited for what this series brings to the table. Fair warning: the teaser that’s been on repeat is what you’ll get in the pilot episode. I won’t share any spoilers but if you assumed Scarlet is this TV’s version of Cosmopolitan, ding ding ding! You are a winner. Melora Hardin kills it as the “devil” in the show who I wouldn’t say is like Miranda Priestly but she could be related to her. Also, while she may be in an office, don’t mistake her for Jan from The Office

Give this show a chance. It won’t give you the chills, but it may give you a few chuckles here and there. Invite your gal pals over too, while you’re at it. There’s nothing better than pointing out who is who in a show while gluing your face to the screen with a large pizza and wine.

The Bold Type premieres Tuesday, July 11 at 9/8c on Freeform. The series stars Aisha Dee, Katie Stevens, Matt Ward, Meghann Fahy, Melora Hardin, and Sam Page.
