Hold The Tardis! ‘Doctor Who’ Returns: Say Farewell to The Ponds and Hello to The New Companion

It’s that time again fellow Whovians, time for us to replace the batteries in our sonic screwdrivers and wait patiently for a blue police box to mysteriously show up in our front yards. Doctor Who returns to BBC America on September 1st with its season premiere episode Asylum of the Daleks.

This season will bring new changes to the beloved cast. Companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillian) and husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) will be making their exit this season. Don’t worry the Ponds’ exit from the show isn’t immediate; they still have one last adventure with the Doctor (Matt Smith) before they say farewell. They’re five-episode farewell arc begins Saturday, September 1st. When viewers last left off with the Doctor and Co. the doctor had faked his own death in order to save the universe (just a normal day for him) and now the Doctor starts off season 7 behind enemy lines. The Doctor finds himself on the planet Skaro, which, as any loyal who can tell you, is the planet of the Daleks, the Doctor’s arch-enemies. The Time Lord will have to battle many different generations of the Daleks in order to get out of this sticky situation safe and sound.

And how does Karen Gillian feel about leaving Doctor Who as she told BBC1’s The One Show

“Putting my feelings and emotions about it to the side, the most important thing to me is the show and the character, and I just wanted her to leave at the right time and to have maximum impact, and not outstay my welcome. Arthur and I have been the longest companions of the new series now so it’s not as if it is happening prematurely. It just kind of feels right.”

Sorry to disappoint some fans who hope for an episode in the future with the Ponds returning, Karen has stated that she will not return to Doctor Who. Gillian spoke to the Radio Times stating “I want the impact of the end of the Pond era to remain strong. I don’t want to spoil it by coming back a few episodes later to say hello”.

Although the Ponds will be greatly missed, fans can console themselves by learning a little bit about the new companion. Jenna-Louise Coleman is signed up and ready to

The Doctor’s newest companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman
play the Doctor’s new companion for season 7. Coleman has stated “I’m beyond excited, I can’t wait to get cracking; working alongside Matt I know is going to be enormous fun and a huge adventure,”

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has high hopes for Coleman as well. During an interview with SFX, Smith had nothing but good things to say about Coleman’s character

“I think [showrunner] Steven [Moffat] is writing her in a very interesting way – a different way to Amy Pond – but we’re very excited and we’re planning to make the show with her bigger and better than ever and just keep moving forward,”

Fans will be able to catch Coleman’s first appearance as the Doctor’s companion during the Doctor Who Christmas special.

Asylum of the Daleks will premiere Saturday September 1st on BBC America at 9/8 c. If fans want to catch more ‘Doctor Who’ they’re in luck. On September 1st BBC America will have an all-day marathon in celebration of the season 7 premiere episode.
