This week’s episode of The Originals took a step back and analyzed the ever down- falling relationship that is Klaus and Marcel and the start of a surprising new relationship between Freya and her once captive now BFF Keelin.
Starting with Freya, who’s running at a constant 1,000 miles per hour, has caught the eye of her captive-now-friend werewolf Keelin who’s out of her deal with Freya, but still wants to stick around to make sure our resident witch doesn’t get caught up in the Hollow’s warpath.
While their relationship did stem from a Stockholm Syndrome situation, I have to admit that I like the direction the writers are heading with Freya’s story line. Since we first met Freya, she’s always been on the sidelines when it comes to any romantic story lines seeming to only exist when Klaus or Hayley need some witchy voodoo magic. It’s nice to see Freya let loose and not be a magical robot every once and a while, so new ship named? Freylin? Keelya?
Back to the main story line of the episode, Klaus and Marcel are both being haunted by the Hollow. Klaus is seeing an A.D. version of his father shouting at him about being a coward. He makes Klaus kill three innocent people and shows him that he can just as easily make him kill the ones he loves like Freya or Hope. Marcel on the other hand is being haunted by Elijah, who used to teach Marcel Shakespeare back in the good old days.
But what does the Hollow want? A blood sacrifice obviously, a duel to the death between Klaus and Marcel so that the Hollow can gain power.
The two don’t actually kill each other, Elijah and Freya save the day, but Klaus also makes the decision to not kill Marcel and give in to what the Hollow wants. By the end of the episode we learn that, while Klaus and Marcel were both able to fight off the Hollow’s influence, Marcel’s pool of blood triggered an evil… vine?
Yes, an evil vine pops out of the pavement in front of Marcel’s girl Sofya, who has been staying in the shadows for most of the season, but is now revealed to be working for the Hollow. Oh, and she want revenge, the typical New Orleans new resident motive. But who exactly is Sofya? She seemed to just appear in Marcel’s life in the premiere episode and has managed to stay in the shadows while the Hollow does its dirty work.
There’s a lot that could be happening here. For one, Sofya could have a past history with the original family, it’s not far fetched at all that she may have been some farmer’s daughter who’s family was slaughtered by Klaus or maybe that Marcel’s rule over New Orleans somehow cost her somebody that she loves. Whichever it may be, I have a feeling that Sofya is going to be a major player in the fight to come against the Hollow.

Our final major player of this week’s episode is Hayley. I can’t help but feel awful for her. Considering she’s our usual New Orleans resident bad-ass, it’s a sobering reminder that she has a dark past with her parent’s murders committed by her own grandmother-in-law’s husband of all people. She learns through his old journals that not everything’s black and white though.
The writing in the journal itself is horrible, practically illegible by the end until Hayley sees the all too familiar serpent drawing in the back of the book. It leads her to the conclusion that the Hollow had something to do with her parents’ deaths.
