Fresh Off the Boat 3×19 Review: “Driving Miss Jenny”

Louis needs to let it roll. A lesson his mother had to embed in him throughout this episode of Fresh Off the Boat. I’ve stated before that the Grandmother, Emery, and Evan do best in dramatic roles than funny ones, and that’s why this episode worked. Jenny (grandmother) wasn’t trying to make quips the whole time and just wanted to live her life without Louis interrupting her. Although, it was funny that she used the “tea technique” as I’ll call it in order to vanish from people. Louis’ over dramatic view towards the situation also added to the humor of this episode. He had turned into a parent for his own parent, and she even mentioned that she was the mother and tried to send him to his room. The ending was the most touching part because although he wanted to give his mom her independence he was still worried about her, and as he was followed she told him he was a good son, and also to at least throw on a song.

Another touching arc of this episode was with Emery. He couldn’t let his possessions go because of all the memories attached to them. Jessica didn’t understand why until he told her that he didn’t want to forget his time in Orlando like he did from D.C. That reveal was really interesting because just like Jess we didn’t know he felt that way, since Emery is always the happy one. In the end, they were able to resolve his problem with a scrapbook. Now he can tell his grandkids about his memories before he has to work for the alien overlords.

While that was going on, Eddie was getting in on Evan’s housekeeping business. Of course, it didn’t go as Evan planned. Eddie had stopped working in order to give half of his profits to Dave, who was doing Eddie’s end of the work. Naturally, when Evan confronted his brother about the situation, Eddie had a logical reason for it. The kid is smart when he needs to be. Unfortunately he got fired, and now Dave is Evan’s partner.

What was great about this episode was that it showed that there doesn’t need to be a bunch of laughs in order to create a good episode. This one did fine even though it was more dramatic than humorous.

Fresh Off the Boat airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC.
