HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY TYF!
THEY GROW UP SO FAST! *PROUD MOMMA TEARS*
Á la V for Vendetta, “Remember, remember the 5th of September!”
As some of you may know, September 5th marks the anniversary for TheYoungFolks.com! You might wonder…how exactly did we come up with the site?In the words of the intro of MTV’s The Real World “you think you know but you have no idea“, just kidding, it isn’t that serious but hey it’s a story that you should know!
*insert emotional flashback music here*
It all began when I really, really wanted to go to Sundance Film Festival. While doing my research, I found helpful information about this: it would be cheaper if I attended the event as press. How in the world could I become a member of the press? I just graduated high school, didn’t even start college yet and had no such thing as a job related to the industry. I asked my good friend Gaby if she knew about any websites that we could write for so we could get press badges. We realized there weren’t any. It was the last week of August, I had just ordered my laptop. As soon as my laptop would arrive we would get into business. At this moment in time, we were both really excited, thinking about all kinds of ideas of what the site could be, of what we could do and write about. My laptop finally arrives on September 1st. It’s time to find a server, set up WordPress, etc. Still, we didn’t have a name in mind. theyoungperspective.com? youngpointofview.com? It all changed when during the days before the 5th, I went to the mall. I was at Victoria’s Secret and they were playing at the store Peter Bjorn & John’s “The Young Folks”
This is it. This is the name we need. I immediately texted Gaby something that looked slightly like this: “OMFG DUDE “THE YOUNG FOLKS” SONG BY PETER BJORN & JOHN!! REMEMBER THE SONG OF THE 1ST GOSSIP GIRL EPISODE!?!? OMG GASP THIS IS IT!“. Gaby and I became friends before TheYoungFolks because we have a lot of fandoms in common, especially Gossip Girl. It was like it all became a full circle. It all took a while, but on September 5th 2010 we officially launched.

Fast-forward to the present, here we are now. A year ago in our 1st birthday, we introduced Nick to the team. Now there are 14 young folks writing (including Gaby and I) so look at that! Cheers TYF! We know you’re not old enough to drink yet, but hey let’s celebrate with a bottle of awesome!
This is what our Twitter looked like on September 6th 2010:
