Leave behind your hate for Justin Bieber at the door. Whether it was the haircut back then, the high pitched voice, his legion of passionate fans, there are many reasons why people hate him, and I get it, but to me the main reason why people hate him is because he is incredibly successful at such young age. Even though, he might not have the best voice out there, the kid is talented and a good entertainer, and whoever disliked him before they very well might like him with Believe. The direction of where his sound is going is completely different from anything we’ve heard before, forget about the bubble gum pop music, Believe has a much more urban/house sound, that could easily appeal to more people and gain their respect.
First of all, I wholeheartedly disagree with the remarks of Justin Bieber being the Kurt Cobain of his generation, because he isn’t even near that and the comparison is just not right. Moving on, I do think that in a future whenever they do a VH1 special of the 2000’s, he’ll be a major part in the latter half because whether you want to admit it or not he has been everywhere ever since “Baby” I think, after that it was like a Bieber explosion. While I haven’t heard his previous albums in its entirety, I have heard some of the most popular singles, “Somebody To Love“, “Never Say Never“, and while I did not dislike them, they did not impress me overall. However, once “Boyfriend” was released, I admit I didn’t even know it was performed by him. It sounded completely different, and I started to notice people around me react the same way: they liked it, had no idea it was Justin Bieber, and while some of them hated him at some point in their lives, they didn’t care with “Boyfriend“. And just like that, slowly but surely Justin Bieber will get the respect he needs in order for him to get a more adult fan base.
Believe has the right blend of slow pop/acoustic songs, an urban feel that makes me want to miss Justin Timberlake, house fused pop much like everything else on the radio and even dubstep in some of them, catering for listeners of almost every genre. In addition, the other artists featured on the album bring to it their elements and actually make the songs really good, like “Right Here” with Drake, which to me will be a song that would get a lot of radio airplay easily. Justin is still growing as a singer and songwriter, and while his sound might have changed, the songs where you could notice his essence are definitely “Fall” and “Catching Feelings” which are more R&B centered. In addition, props to Justin for writing a song for Mariah Yeater called “Maria“, remember that girl that said that she had his baby? Well, perfect opportunity to say something back to her.
In conclusion, Justin Bieber didn’t bring sexyback but brought a more mature sound that will have people believe in him, and calling it now, in five years from now or less he might give us something like “Cry Me A River“.
