New Orleans, still just as hectic as ever with the power struggles of witches, vampires and werewolves, even with King Klaus in chains locked away in the over-grown Mikaelson Estate in the season 4 premiere of The Originals.
In “Gather Up the Killers,” New Orleans is thriving, sort of, under the rule of Marcel who’s very good at pretending he has everything under control. When, in fact, his control is slowly unraveling at the seams. Besides the fact he has, a still very good looking, Klaus chained up in the basement of the abandoned Estate, Marcel still has to use fear tactics to maintain control over his kingdom.
Which brings in our villian-of-the-episode Alistair, a very old vampire with a vendetta against Klaus who turned him into a vampire and forced him to kill his entire estate along with his wife and child. Alistair was actually a really cool villain for his five seconds of fame, and I hate when Julie Plec does this: make a interesting villain with an interesting backstory then, bam, dead.
Marcel teams up with Klaus to take Alistair down in order to maintain the peace in New Orleans, which they successfully do of course with Klaus murdering Alistair like a wild animal as spectators are reaffirmed that Marcel is king.
Alright, Marcel. You keep thinking that while Hayley and the gang rescue Klaus and take you down again and again and again.
Yes, Hayley was successful this episode in waking up the Mikaelson siblings with the reluctant help of a werewolf girl she kidnapped in Austin, Texas in order to create an antidote made from the venom of seven werewolf packs and Klaus’ blood. While taking down a group up, I’m not even sure what they were, hunters maybe? While Freya rising from her sleeping curse and wakes up the rest of the gang.
But, not all is well in New Orleans. While I have no doubts that Hayley, Elijah and the gang will successfully rescue Klaus in the next episode, there’s something darker brewing in the shadows. Something witch-related since strange symbols are being drawn all over New Orleans of a dragon eating it’s tail. Vincent’s new love interest, a single mother, young son comes face to face with whatever this new threat is, and, things didn’t seem to turn out well for the screaming boy.
Of course, it all goes back to little Hope though. Who’s refreshingly six years old about at this time and can actually be developed into a full-fledged character. The writers aren’t holding anything back by making Hope draw picture after picture of the dragon symbol, being waken up by nightmares of whatever this new monster is.

With its mother show The Vampire Diaries over, it sure feels good to be back in New Orleans for more of the vampire/witch/werewolf/hybrid drama-fest the is The Originals.
