The Vampire Diaries 8×15 Review: “We’re Planning a June Wedding”

Wedding bells are in the air as The Vampire Diaries reaches its end with Caroline’s bridal dreams becoming reality in the penultimate “We’re Planning a June Wedding,” which had a surprisingly low death-count as far as TV weddings are involved.

The ceremony didn’t go off without a hitch though with queen-of-hell Katherine’s silhouette looming in the shadows throughout the episode. Her recruited minions, Kelly and Vicki Donovan, who also escaped hell are bent on destroying Mystic Falls. Their motives aren’t really explained (besides the fact that they don’t want to go back to hell), but they sure do create a fiery storm at the ceremony  by literally blowing up the Salvatore house during the reception.

Or course Bonnie and the twins are inside because Bonnie just can’t get a break, and there’s a pretty good chance Bonnie is the one who kicks the bucket in the finale. Even though Bon Bon used her siphoning powers with the twins to escape the blaze (giving up her chances of seeing Enzo again), when Vicki stars ringing the Maxwell Bell, Bonnie passes out in front of Stefan with the looming, nose-bleeding, cliffhanger leaving us uncertain if Bonnie will escape death one last time.

Frankly, I don’t want Bonnie to survive this.

Bonnie has became the painful, heartbreaking baggage of the show. She is pretty miserable living life without Enzo, and if death will allow her to have a happy, ghostly existence in another plane with him, then I’m perfectly fine with letting Bonnie go for good. It would be less painful then to see either of our Salvatore brothers go, or, god-forbid, Caroline, just after they all seem to be heading towards their happy endings with Elena finally waking up next episode.

But enough about death, let’s talk about that epic wedding. While I was on the edge of my seat the entire time (I was almost certain the necklace Caroline was wearing was going to explode), I was pleasantly surprised that the wedding went off without a hitch for the most part. Of course the couple wasn’t actually prepared to go through with the wedding, but they managed to come up with some beautiful wedding vows on the fly. Which makes me think what if Stefan and Caroline were always the goal for the show writers?

I mean, how perfect did their story end up turning out? The fact that when Caroline and Stefan first met she knew that they were going to get married, she knew that he was the one and she knew that, at some point, he would be ready to be with her. I think we all brushed off Caroline’s advances on Stefan because of Elena. The show was all about Stefan and Elena’s epic romance until it wasn’t. Until Damon came along and won the girl, and Caroline replaced the Elena-shaped hole in Stefan’s heart. That’s good story-telling, even if the show writers didn’t plan it out all along and the stars just happened to align.

Other great, nostalgic moments? Damon and Stefan’s hilarious bachelor party in Katherine’s tomb with the she-devil herself. Well, at least her skeletal remains. Poor Stefan can’t hold his liquor anymore though and ends up moaning on the couch as Damon and Caroline have their sweet moment on the porch together.

Not so great moments? The Donovan family drama. The fact that Matt’s father somehow survived Kelly slashing his throat and not being found, for like, an entire day without bleeding out.

Other than Donovan drama, this was the best episode of the season so far, and I only expect nothing but tears, hopefully happy endings and some truly epic moments in next week’s last episode of The Vampire Diaries.

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays on The CW.
