The Fosters is back with all new episodes! This was a bit of an unsurprising première, in my opinion. The episode continued with Callie’s rogue investigation gone wrong, her desire to help has continued to get her into trouble and this time into some serious danger. In the midst of trying to raise funds to get justice for Jack’s mistreatment in the foster system, she also wants to raise money for Kyle, to help get him a fair trail. Through these efforts, Martha Johnson’s grandson comes across Callie. His involvement in her murder becomes more plausible when Callie finds herself stuck in a car with an overly agitated Troy. Their heated exchange leads to a multiple car accident, from which Callie runs away. Of course, as always happens with Callie, her actions come back to haunt her, the girl can’t get a break. That her actions will lead to jail time, as suggested in the preview for next week’s episode, seems unlikely but we’ll have to wait and see.
Now for the main focus of the episode, the effects of Jesus’ nail gun injury have become more serious than expected. The fight with Nick has, as the show explicitly told us would occur last season, led to a seizure. The fact that Jesus has had to be induced into a coma and operated on seems alarming but this isn’t the type of show to take characters to extremes from which they cannot recover. I could be wrong but am hopeful and pretty certain that Jesus will be okay. What was somewhat surprising was the legal aspect of the fight, with Nick accusing Jesus of attacking him, who knows how that part of the incident will play out through the rest of the season.
Brandon continues to deal with losing his chance at Juilliard by seeking comfort with Courtney. In a relationship that was bound to be disastrous, Brandon can’t seem to let it go. Of course, Courtney no longer wants anything to do with him after the chaos they brought to each other’s lives and so it seems like that chapter is finally closing. How Brandon will deal with his new reality will be interesting to see unfold.
And finally we have Mariana and how badly managing life can have severe consequences. Lena finds out about her taking Jesus’ ADHD medication and Emma blames her for what has happened to Jesus. Although the preview only seems to suggest that Mariana’s new trials will deal with how this will affect her relationship with Matt, I do hope we get to see more of her life and how she grows from her experiences this season.
