Jocelyn’s death still doesn’t feel real. Even though it was on screen it still doesn’t feel right, and it seems like the characters are feeling the same way, which is a nice way to get viewers to relate to the story.
Naturally the person who couldn’t accept this death was Clary. She was determined to bring her mother back to life no matter the consequences. It wasn’t a smart idea, but it’s hard not to feel the same if your own mother died. What was good about Clary’s first interaction with Iris was that she wasn’t completely stricken with grief that she easily accepted owing the warlock a favor. She questioned what the favor would entitle, but she didn’t get an answer. In the end Clary tried to bring her mother back anyways, but she realized that it was a bad idea once the ritual started. Unfortunately, her favor was to have a warlock baby, which meant that a demon would have to put a baby inside her. The best part about her encounter with said demon was that she fought back. Clary has a lot of moments when she doesn’t take action, but seeing her grab the chain to try and fight it off shows that she’s not always scared. The fact that she was able to create a temporary new rune and kill the demon shows that she has the potential to take care of herself in the future.
Jace didn’t have a chance to get to know Jocelyn, and that bothered him. It was interesting to see how this death affected him since the two of them weren’t close, also, she tried to kill him. It turned out that he wanted to get to know her better despite her previous actions. He wanted to show her that he wasn’t just an experiment gone wrong, and that was a character defining moment. Jace knows what he is but he doesn’t want to be scene as it. It’s sad that it looks like he won’t get that moment, but who knows what will happen in the future.
Another thing about Jace is that he’s no longer allowed to go on field missions. He didn’t seem too concerned about it, but Jace isn’t the type to be okay with being cooped up. The final thing about Jace is that he wants Clary to keep her powers a secret. Hopefully he’s only thinking about her safety.
Alec couldn’t come to terms with killing Jocelyn. Even though he’s never been a fan of Clary he never would’ve wanted to hurt her in the way he did. It wasn’t his fault, but he couldn’t help but feel guilty. It’s unclear whether he’ll be more nice to Clary in the future, but he took the first step by accompanying her to Iris’s place. Only the rest of the season will tell if this action will still eat away at him going forward.
Izzy hasn’t had much going on this season, but now with her injury and the future introduction of the Iron Sisters it seems like things will get more interesting for her. The injury being infected wasn’t intriguing, but Aldertree’s action towards her was. He seems to like her, which is something he never showed in previous episodes. It’s not clear if there relationship is slowly being force, or if he’s using her somehow. What the audience does know is that the medicine he gave her gives a sense of instant ecstasy. It’s not clear how this will affect Izzy, especially if she uses the ointment on a mission. We also found out that she has always wanted to meet the Iron Sisters, and was willing to do anything to go on the mission to meet them. Based on the promo for next week’s episode she’s going to meet them, but it doesn’t look like she’s going to have a good time.
Simon once again is having issues. His sister gave him a visit and snooped around his things discovering he had real human blood. She chose to flush it, and Simon did nothing. It didn’t make sense that he didn’t at least try to compel her, or attempt to get it back. He’s super fast and strong, so that scene didn’t make sense. It also felt weird that he didn’t show his mom anything that would reveal that he’s actually a vampire. He simply stated it and figured it was enough. His mom found out the hard way, but it’s unclear whether she’ll believe he is a vampire, or needs medical help.

Lastly, Magnus revealed some of his background in that his mom took her life when she realized that he was a warlock. He also stated that sending Camille away hurt him a lot because of all they went through. It’s not clear if that will negatively affect his relationship with Alec down the road, but there’s always a chance it will.
