Always remember who to thank in your acceptance speech. That’s the problem that Louis had this episode when he forgot to thank Jessica in his acceptance speech. She was so proud of him, and even went out of her to invite everyone they knew, but when the time came he forgot to thank her, which she was not pleased about. How could you blame her?
What made the mistake so funny was that Deidre kept calling the house to thank Louis, but then she’d passive aggressively make fun of the fact that she wasn’t thanked with lines like, “How are you holding up?” It was a nice reminder that Diedre isn’t nice to people. Jessica and her do things together sometimes, but it’s not because they’re friendly. It’s usually because they’re trying to get a leg up on each other. These jokes also made Jessica’s pain funny for the viewer which was a nice touch.
Even though Louis messed up so bad he got another chance to thank her on Good Morning Orlando. Unfortunately, the moment he was going to thank her the news switched to a group of armadillos that were blocking the road. They would’ve been moved, but one of them was about to give birth so the news stayed with them. If only Louis had thanked her first instead of thanking the same people from last time then his wife. That moment reminded the viewers that despite being businessman of the year it’s harder to be husband of the year. After the second failure he had to hide at Marv’s and get some help from Evan. In the end he was forgiven because he put on a private awards show in their house where he thanked her, and only her.
Meanwhile, Emery and Eddie started their own clothing line of knockoff jeans that they were selling in school with the help of their grandma. Things were looking up and they were selling a lot of jeans. Even the principal was okay with their business, but he was the one who ended up ruining it. Drawing inspiration from the kids, he bought a real pair of jeans from the mall and wore them to school. That scene was a reminder of how adults can ruin young trends. One look at the principal and everyone was done with those jeans forever. In the end the boys had broken even.
This episode was a decent one, but it felt more like filler. The two stories felt like they were lacking overall. Typically there’s more going on in the episodes and the lack of that made this episode feel odd. Maybe the show does need more going on from episode to episode.
Then it was about to be Chinese New Year and the Huangs wanted to start off with a clean slate. This lead to characters being paired with one another to try and keep that slate clean, and they all learned valuable lessons at the end.

The best duo was Eddie and his cousin Simon. Even though Eddie was being rude to his cousin the situation felt slightly relatable because most viewers might’ve been in a position where they have to watch a sibling or another family, and they just don’t want to. Fortunately and unfortunately for Eddie this lead to him discovering that Simon knows how to freestyle, but he also got embarrassed through gaining this knowledge. In the end it brought the two of them closer which was nice, and it showed that he should’ve gotten to know him first.
Meanwhile Louis and Evan tried to get back hate mail from Reuben. It was hard to fault Evan from his anger because he got two bad haircuts, and Louis was willing to settle for less because Reuben was nice. The two of them didn’t recover the letter, but it was nice that Evan was able to show his dad that he settled. Louis eventually got the hairstyle wanted even though it didn’t look as good on him, but at least now he knows.
Last was Jessica and Emery. Emery was so ready to help his mom finally get a clean slate that he chose to get the dry cleaning for her. Then when he needed her to be mean the most she let him down. Those scenes were funny because she was so nice. It didn’t even seem like she was fighting through her anger she was basically a sad, but kind personality. Eventually she did blow up on the guy at the dry cleaners, but we didn’t get to see it which was disappointing, especially since he was clearly scamming people out of money by telling them that they didn’t pay enough. That scene should’ve been in the episode. Flaw aside, Emery did learn that his mom wants him to stay a nice boy and not go crazy on people. Also, she didn’t keep her slate clean, but only she knows that.
