Synopsis: Ferris Bueller meets La Femme Nikita in this funny, action-packed young adult novel.
It’s prom night—and Perry just wants to stick to his own plan and finally play a much anticipated gig with his band in the Big Apple. But when his mother makes him take Gobija Zaksauskas—their quiet, geeky Lithuanian exchange student—to the prom, he never expects that his ordinary high school guy life will soon turn on its head. Perry finds that Gobi is on a mission, and Perry has no other choice but to go along for a reckless ride through Manhattan’s concrete grid with a trained assassin in Dad’s red Jag. Infused with capers, car chases, heists, hits, henchmen, and even a bear fight, this story mixes romance, comedy, and tragedy in a true teen coming-of-age adventure—and it’s not over until it’s “au revoir.”
This book intrigued me by the title alone, then it was the cover and I thought “this should be a fun read”, and it was. After reading some books that would either make me cry or a story would be complex enough to not give my brain a break, “Au Revoir Crazy European Chick” is a fun, fast-paced read about how many things can go wrong or in some cases right in just one night. Call it the action book of “Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist”, this book is perfect for both guys and girls, with the right amounts of action and humor to make the story entertaining. The main character, Perry, comes off as naive and innocent, the main struggles he faces throughout the book are doing what he really desires but also trying to please his father. However, everything changes once he’s thrown into a never-ending New York City night with Gobi, who ends up being some sort of trained assassin. At the beginning of every chapter, there are college essay prompts, which made the book interesting because at the end of each chapter, those questions became relevant to the story. This isn’t the book you want to read if you’re looking for character development, if anything this book is plot driven, keeping the reader intrigued about what will happen next. “Au Revoir Crazy European Chick” is the type of book that could easily be translated into film, and guess what? Paramount owns the rights, let’s hope that the movie will be released soon!
Without giving too much away, this book could easily be read in one seating. “Au Revoir Crazy European Chick” is action-packed, funny and fast paced, perfect if you want to read a different young adult novel that actually takes place in present time.
