TV Review: Reign 3×12 “No Way Out”

Queen Mary has returned from her trip to the Vatican, but it’s no surprise that things didn’t quite go the way she’d planned. But what would Reign be without political tension between warring queens?

Before Mary even had a chance to act on the new army bestowed onto her by the Vatican (which she initially opted to keep secret from Gideon) tides had already begun to shift again. Elizabeth has declared Mary her heir, which means that, yes, she’d be next in line for the English throne but also that Mary has to acknowledge that her cousin’s claim to the throne is more legitimate. Not the best case scenario by any stretch, but Team Vatican has a plan. They’ll have Elizabeth killed in order to put Mary on the English throne, something I’m a little surprised Elizabeth didn’t consider. More surprising was Mary’s reaction to the plan. She’s in a worse political position than ever, but wasn’t willing to even consider having her own cousin murdered in order to secure her own country. I would have at least expected a little back and forth, but instead she immediately rushes to Gideon in hopes of finding a way to save Elizabeth that wouldn’t cost her Scotland. And since there was apparently some time to kill here (along with that one English ambassador) Mary and Gideon also managed to find some alone time together, following Catherine’s suggestion that she take him as a lover.

Oh look, Greer is still around. Mary stopped by her tavern in order to ask her former lady-in-waiting to return with her queen to Scotland when the time comes. Greer seemed excited… briefly. But she soon asked Mary if she could stay in France for at least a while longer, leaving her long time friend disappointed. Honestly, this felt more like a way to remind everyone that Greer is still part of the show than anything remotely plot related, but hey, it’s always nice to see our favorite business woman.

Lady Lola did end up with a lot more to do this week. While it finally looked like we were done with Queen Elizabeth and Robert Dudley; it turns out she’s been sneaking off to secret visits with the most hated man in England this whole time, and bringing Lola along for the ride as part of her alibi. These two are finally starting to become real friends, something Elizabeth will absolutely need now that she has promised her former lover as Mary’s next husband, as part of the new deal with Scotland. I was really hoping we’d seen the last of this guy, and don’t want to see him try to make his way in French court, but I’m willing to wait and see how all of this plays out.

Through all of this, life at the French court goes on. Politics, plays, and of course someone is trying to kill Catherine. She immediately suspects Narcisse but it’s now looking like the thirteen knights who want her dead have a lot more to do with Catherine’s past than her present. How her serial killer boyfriend fits into any of this, who can say? It’s getting a little hard to keep up with the why’s of Reign anymore, better to just enjoy the ride.
