This week’s Shadowhunters picks up exactly after last episode’s surprise ending. Simon has been captured by vampires, and Clary has to convince Jace, Alec, and Izzy to go save him. Once again, the whole reason that these events transpired was due to the fact that the vampires wanted to trade the Mortal Cup for Simon. Everyone wants that cup! That being said the show really does a great job hyping up just how important this object means to everyone.
Back to this week’s villains, this episode’s Downworlders were the vampires from Hotel DuMort, specifically Camille (Kaitlyn Leeb) and Raphael (David Castro). Both actors did a good job bringing these creatures to life. They both had the attitude of beings who had been around for quite a while, not mention the make up on their faces brought the right amount of pale skin. Out of the two of vamps, Camille definitely stole the show. It was great to see her mess with Simon as if she were playing with her food. There was also a moment where she tosses him aside like the mundane he is, reiterating how everyone views regular humans. Unfortunately, when it came down to the action, Camille was very inactive. She’s a more of a call-the-shots type of undead girl. Hopefully, in future episodes, she’ll show more of her skillset.
As for the Shadowhunters, there were some positives for most of the characters, but there were also some negatives. Let’s start with Clary. “Dead Man’s Party” was definitely a shining moment for her character development. Unlike last episode, she seemed to completely accept that the Shadow World was part of her life. Although she still isn’t happy about finding out that her father is Valentine, no one can blame her for that. Those feelings aside, it was pivotal for her to find her best friend, Simon. She was laser-focused on finding that guy, which displayed how much he actually means to her. Along her search for Simon, Clary was also able to gain some Shadowhunter skills. She’s clearly on her way to becoming what she was always meant to be.
Jace on the other hand appeared to be a bit out of character. He’s suppose to be this emotionless soldier that honestly shows a little more emotion than he lets on, but in this episode, his feelings were pretty straight forward. He was clearly sending out signals to Clary that he liked her, and I know it’s been apparent before. Despite that though, the sword training scene was a nice touch, even if it was cliche.
Last but not least are Alec and Izzy. “Dead Man’s Party” did a lot more positive for Alec than his sister. Regardless of his constant need to argue against most people’s ideas, his points this week actually made a lot of logical sense. His thoughts may be wrong in the grand scheme of things, but it was hard to argue against all the concerns he was voicing. This episode also brought to light the bond that him and Jace share for each other. It’s apparently deeper than can be explained. There was also hints that his sister gave about there being something that she knew about Alec that no one else knew. Maybe that secret will come to light in next week. Izzy, on the other hand, was the same as usual, overly sexual and that’s about it. It was interesting to find out that she liked a particular species of people, and there was also a cool fight scene she had with her brother, but otherwise, she was the same as always. Hopefully her character grows more personally than sexually.
Overall, the best part about this series is the way in which it continues to slowly expand its universe. This episode introduced the people known as Seelies, beings that are both part demon and part angel. Typically, these beings are like elves and faeries. It also elaborated on the fact that Shadowhunters are part angels themselves. It turns out that vampires can detect their distinct scent. Another small detail that was mentioned was that ancient religions use to believe in demons and would help the Shadowhunters in their fight against them. It probably won’t happen, but an episode revolved around that idea seems pretty interesting.
“Dead Man’s Party” was a step in the right direction, and hopefully this show can continue to grow.

On a side note, The Institute really needs to step up its security.
