Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness. In the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, Relhok’s lost princess, has been hiding in a tower ever since. Luna’s survival depends on the world believing she is dead.
But that doesn’t stop Luna from wanting more. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer braving the woods outside her tower, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk. When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is more treacherous than Luna ever realized.
With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet.
Reign of Shadows is a retelling of Rapunzel, featuring Luna as our heroine. For her entire life, Luna has lived in a tower in the woods, hiding from the chancellor who murdered her parents. She’s put up with safety restrictions but begins to grow restless as her desire for seeing the world increases. In a moment of defiance, she leaves the tower alone and accidentally rescues Fowler and his companions from an attack. Days later, the tower is attacked and Luna and Fowler escape and begin their journey searching for a safer place.
I really like Luna as our main character. She’s feisty, strong, and determined. Without spoiling anything, I love the fact that she doesn’t let her limitations get in the way of anything. Until Fowler figures things out a few chapters in, I had no idea that Luna was different at all. Her “nothing-holds-me-back” attitude is inspiring and makes you eager to root for her.
The world that Reign of Shadows is set in is pretty crazy. Let’s just say I have no desire to go there any time soon… I like my life with sunlight and dweller free, thank you very much! I enjoyed getting to explore the world of Relhok alongside the characters. The fantasy elements lead to some great action-packed scenes.
The romance between Luna and Fowler is so well done. I loved the slow build of their relationship, especially while they’re on this intense journey. Luna and Fowler go from arguing and barely tolerating each to truly caring. I would read the sequel just for more of their relationship. It might be my favorite part of the entire book.

Overall, Reign of Shadows is a fun and fast-paced fantasy adventure, with a swoon-worthy romance. Sophie Jordan leaves us with a serious cliffhanger and I can’t wait to find out what happens in book two.

ABOUT SOPHIE JORDAN:
Sophie Jordan took her adolescent daydreaming one step further and penned her first historical romance in the back of her high school Spanish class. This passion led her to pursue a degree in English and History.

A brief stint in law school taught her that case law was not nearly as interesting as literature – teaching English seemed the natural recourse. After several years teaching high school students to love Antigone, Sophie resigned with the birth of her first child and decided it was time to pursue the long-held dream of writing.
In less than three years, her first book, Once Upon A Wedding Night, a 2006 Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Nominee for Best First Historical, hit book shelves. Her second novel, Too Wicked To Tame, released in March 2007 with a bang, landing on the USA Today Bestseller’s List.
