When you go to pvzgardenwarfare.com the first thing you’ll see is their tagline, ‘Shooters Just Got Weird,’ and I think that about sums things up. While this game is absolutely a shooter, it’s not quite like any other game on the market. Coming off of the mega successful Plants vs. Zombies tower defence game, this version of the epic battle between the undead and their plant rivals takes the concept in a completely new direction. And it’s a whole lot of fun! I’ve loved this game for well over a year now and will recommend it to anyone and everyone who is looking for the strategy of a shooter without the pressure of hardcore gaming, or the sometimes toxic environment of their communities.
Full disclosure, I haven’t played many FPS (first person shooter) games, so I’m hardly an expert. But that is absolutely what makes this game so enjoyable. You don’t need to be a hardcore anything to not only have a good time, but also be a halfway decent team member. The concept is simple, and you can get the hang of the play style within a few rounds. Two sides battle it out in a variety of different game modes. Both teams have four different player classes, which can also be customized for some game types. I’m partial to the Sunflowers myself (healers for Team Plant), but every class offers a fun new dynamic.
Personally, I’m more a fan of mixing up what kind of game I’m playing rather than how/who I’m playing it with. Game modes range from Gardens vs Grave Yards (base capture), Gnome Bomb (capture the flag), and Taco Bandits (zone defence), to more classic play styles like Team Vanquish. Everything from these game modes, to the graphics to the play style reflects the sense of humor of this franchise as well as the overall vibe of not needing to take anything too seriously. We’re all here to have a good time and kill some zombies!
This is a fairly excellent game for casual gamers who want to branch out into shooters without the pressure of more hardcore games. And despite the fact that this game came out early last year, when I started playing again this month I still had no problem finding games. This game is still going strong, so it’s far from too late to check it out. Bonus: At this year’s E3 event, Electronic Arts announced Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, which will take place after the plants have lost the war, giving them their first chance to go on the offensive. Coming 2016.
