Until I Die picks up a little while after Die for Me ends. Kate and Vincent are blissfully in love and learning to live life together as human and revenant. But things start to taper off as the revenants try to figure out the sudden disappearance of the numa, their mortal enemies. All the while, Vincent is trying out an experiment to help him resist the urge of dying for Kate’s sake. Yet, he refuses to divulge the details of this “experiment.” Annoyed by Vincent’s secrets, Kate starts investigating into revenant/human relationship history on her own, which can lead to some very dangerous situations.
Unlike the first book, I was completely riveted by Until I Die. Now that we know everyone and get the gist of the supernatural elements, the real story and action begins. At first, I always thought that Vincent was a little too perfect, and now we get to see some flaws. Vincent is a bit annoying with his refusal to tell Kate about his experiments, especially when it’s something that can affect their relationship. And of course, Kate’s response is to create some secrets of her own. We’re kept in the dark about what’s going on with Vincent, but what Kate’s doing happens to be infinitely more interesting and really moves the story along.
The addition of the new characters and higher involvement of the old ones brought a lot to the story, and they definitely added some exciting twists and turns. We get to know Kate’s sister, Georgia, and Vincent’s friend, Jules, a lot better. Both make awesome supporting characters, and it’s nice that we got to see more of them and weren’t so focused on Kate/Vincent. By the time I got the end, I was sad to end my time with all these guys (if only temporarily).
Also, in regards to end, it. is. AMAZING. Mild spoiler warning: it ends in a cliffhanger. But a VERY good cliffhanger. Usually cliffhangers annoy me to no end. But the author executed the final act of Until I Die, basically everything that led to the ending, so perfectly. I can’t remember the last time that the last sentence of a book left me breathless. I’m positively dying for the next book. I may be a revenant by the time the next (and final?) Revenant book releases.
