Just a few warnings before I actually begin to review the book:
- I wanted to read The No More Excuses Diet not because I’m particularly interested in a diet book or in weight loss, but because I’m interested in Maria Kang, who most notably caused controversy when she posted a picture of her fit body and added the caption “what’s your excuse.”
- I am definitely not the target audience for any diet book, and thus, I might not have the most accurate review.
- Unlike me, Maria Kang is a very organized soul. Hence, do not judge her book entirely from my review.
Basically, The No More Excuses Diet promises to be the diet book you never had. In fact, the cover has the following phrase, “3 Days to Bust Any Excuse, 3 Weeks to Easy New Eating Habits, 3 Months to Total Transformation.” Though Kang’s claim of three days, three weeks, and three months is definitely an exaggeration, I don’t think it’s much of an exaggeration. Kang is born to be a motivational speaker, although her methods in the past have been questionable. The No More Excuses Diet applies to many aspects of life, since Kang’s excuse-busting is definitely flawless. (What’s my excuse? Oh wait, I don’t have one!)
This being said, The No More Excuses Diet seems pretty generic. (Take my critique with a grain of salt though; I haven’t read many diet books.) Kang doesn’t offer any breakthrough techniques or new information on nutrition or health. Yes, it’s important to be healthy, but how is Kang’s book different from any other weight loss book? (Yes, this is a rhetorical question that I can’t answer myself.)
As for the meal plans and pictures for at-home workouts, all I have to say is that Kang is precise. Actually, I lied. I have more to say. I don’t think meal plans and at-home workouts will actually be used. They’re like New Year’s Resolutions: nice, but ineffective because we’re lazy people. This being said, Kang’s meal plans are well thought-out, and her pictures really show how to do the exercises. (Then again, I already knew how to squat…)
The No More Excuses Diet seems like a pretty good book to buy if you want to make some lifestyle changes. Maria Kang is probably the most motivational exercise guru there is.
So, I’ll end on the first sentence of Kang’s book. “What’s your excuse for not having the body that you want?”
