TV Show Review: ‘Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23’ Series Premiere

Particularly as of late, I’m not big on sitcoms. Sure, I watch New Girl and sometimes Two Broke Girls, but I don’t really keep up with them like I do with the other shows I watch. Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 managed to skip my radar until the other day when the pilot episode was available for me to watch. I had nothing to do, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt spending the next 22 or so minutes giving it a chance. And well… I can’t say that I really like it. Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 is severely lacking in wit, which essentially a show like this would need to survive.

If you were like me and for some reason thought this show was like horror sitcom (the teasers made Apt. 23 seem so ominous), here’s a quick synopsis. When June (Dreama Walker) loses her high-paying job, she forced into moving with Chloe (Krysten Ritter), a crazy and bullying party girl who’s best friends with James Van Der Beek (James Van Der Beek).

June is a nice small town girl, easily likable. Chloe is the exact opposite. She’s frankly a bitch. But that’s not even my problem with her. She’s annoying. Her lines aren’t funny; her bitchiness is neither clever nor funny. Isn’t that supposed to be the whole point of the show to find this bitch at least witty and entertaining? The best thing about the show is James Van Der Beek playing himself. The Dawson’s Creek jokes got a couple laughs out of me. However, the rest of the show just fell flat.

Pilot episodes are always a bit rough, but this one hardly tries to impress. With characters and humor like that, I can’t see myself caring to watch any more of it or willing to give it another try. On top of that, I really hate the marketing for this show. Let’s keep promoting women as these crazy, terrifying creatures for you to laugh at. I can’t help but be a tad offended by that.
