Get ready to ease on down the road with The Wiz Live! this holiday season on NBC.
After the success of “The Sound of Music Live!” and “Peter Pan Live”, NBC has decided that The Wiz will be its next live musical television event. The Wiz is the reimagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an all-black cast and set in an Oz with a fantastical urban twist. The play debuted on Broadway in 1975 and ran for four years; it also won a Tony for best musical. A film was made in 1978 which starred Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow.
It was announced earlier this week that Stephanie Mills, who played Dorothy in the original Broadway production, will play Auntie Em. She is the first actor to be cast for the upcoming production. No word yet on who will be cast as Dorothy.
The Wiz Live! will hit center stage on December 3rd.
