TV Review: The Originals (2×20) “City Beneath the Sea”

This week’s episode of The Originals turned everything on its head. I didn’t expect the Dahlia plot line to go like this. I’m not quite sure whether I liked it or hated it.

One thing I have always enjoyed about both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals is the writers ability to humanize their villains. We finally got to hear from Dahlia and see her side of the story. The relationship between Freya and Dahlia is completely changed. It now makes sense why they were feeding us reasons to not trust Freya. I really liked how they redeemed Dahlia as someone who genuinely cared for Freya and wanted to save her from herself, but that didn’t make her a good guy. She just has some humanity underneath her lust for power.

It also brought back to the surface Hope’s power. We have seen a glimpse of it, which was fantastic, but I can’t wait to see more of it. I don’t really know how the werewolf/hybrid/witch thing is going to work, but I am excited to see how it goes. At first it reminded me a lot of Charmed, but I think they will be going in a different direction.

I wasn’t really a fan of the turn of events where Klaus is concerned. I can see why he would want retribution for the betrayal of his siblings, but for him to want to kill Hayley doesn’t seem believable. It bothers me that they are constantly trying to villainize Klaus as this cruel and ruthless person. In the end, I think  he will save everyone.

As for the other characters in this episode, they are either hit or miss with me. I am very happy to see Cami being featured more and to see her feelings for Klaus. I like the chance for Devina to gain power. Jackson needs to die at the end of this season. I can’t stand him and he is so irrelevant to this story. I’m beginning to really not like Hayley at all. She has changed so much from season one and I don’t think it was for the better.

There are only two more episodes left of this season! What do you think is going to happen?

Episode Grade: 5/10

The Originals airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
