TV Review: ‘Jane the Virgin’ Chapter 12

Chapter 12 of Jane the Virgin, which aired last night on The CW, was a doozy. Usually, I like to touch base with every little story line going on in the show, but this time I’m going start out by talking about that shocker at the end.

If you didn’t watch the latest episode of Jane the Virgin, major spoilers are about to go down here. Beware.

ROSE IS SIN ROSTRO!

As the season has gone by, I’ve had some outrageous theories of who Sin Rostro could be, but Rose was never a suspect. We got a hint of her manipulative side when she turned on Louisa and had her institutionalized. Her “scared” act in the past two episodes was a bit overacted, but we can’t say we know Rose all that much to know when she’s truly scared. (Clearly, neither can any of the other characters.) After seeing her bury her husband in a bed of concrete, it’s safe to say that this Sin Rostro mystery is all falling into place.

But what is it that Rose/Sin Rostro wants? I understand she runs a crime empire, but what are her motives in regards to the Solano family, especially with Rafael? I guess we’ll need to wait and see. But if anything, I bet Lachlan is also involved.

Okay, this show isn’t called Sin Rostro the Virgin… Let’s talk a little about what’s going on with our dear Jane. Her new job writing for Rogelio’s telenovela is taking off. She is asked to write a script for one of the upcoming episodes. Of course, that news has a big downside. In that episode, she has to kill off Rogelio’s character. To say Rogelio doesn’t take the news well is an understatement. How can someone has wonderful and perfect as him get killed off his own show? With that kind of humility, it’s no surprise that the telenovela writers are bit gleeful to stop working with him.

Luckily, Xiomara is there to reassure Rogelio of his talent and sexiness, without breaking her vow of chastity. It ends with Jane writing a glorious final scene for Rogelio’s character that makes everyone proud.

Much of Jane’s good nature has been brought up on several occasions in the past few episodes. Her relationship with Rafael is getting more serious, and their differences are becoming more obvious. This comes up when she convinces Rafael that they should accept Louisa’s request for group therapy. Rafael is not ready to forgive his sister, and you can argue that Jane has to ability to sympathize with a door knob. So while Rafael is still hesitant to work things out with his sister, at least Jane’s there to make sure they make it through this rough patch.

Finally, Petra encounters the dreaded Milos, her abusive ex-boyfriend. He reveals to her that he never meant to throw acid at her; he meant it to hit her mother for lying and trying to tear them apart. She doesn’t really believe him though. Later on, he grabs Petra and puts a knife to her throat. Petra’s mother screams at him to stop, but he doesn’t and slices Petra’s throat. Horrified, her mother stands up from her wheelchair and walks, only to find out it was a test. The blood running down Petra’s neck is fake; Milos schemed this little antic to prove that Petra’s mother is a liar. Petra surprised that her mother can walk, she asks her to leave.

The episode ends with the Sin Rostro reveal, which even makes the narrator speechless. Now, that we know who Sin Rostro is; I wonder how things are going to play out for the rest of the season.
