Book Tour: ‘Finding Her Way Back’ by Heather Van Fleet

 

Somewhere on the internet I read about an actor (back in the days of yore) who was so bad at pretending to die that the audience asked for an encore just so that they could laugh at his poor acting. Reading Finding Her Way Back was kind of like that.

Meet Callie Bennett – a loud, hot-blooded Illinois girl who returns home from college after a horrible semester at school. Her brother, his wife and her nephew were involved in a horrible accident and only her brother managed to make it out alive, but not wholly; he’s been stuck in a coma for the longest while. Callie, being so hurt from the whole ordeal, goes off to college to escape from everything. In her rush to evade having to deal with the tragedy, she leaves behind her skinny, skater boy, best friend, Kylan Hampton. However, when she returns home he isn’t the same person she left. He’s buff, toned, incredibly gorgeous and still holds a candle for her. A lot of things have changed at home. Even her bitchy sister has seemed to be moving up in life and will be getting married to a rich guy who doesn’t seem to love her. As the story progresses, Ky and Callie rekindle their friendship and so much more as he slowly helps her to heal.

Even though the story is about this girl who is dealing with some serious issues, it seems like the author wraps the story entirely around Callie. When the narration switches from Callie to Ky, it still sounds as if it’s Callie speaking. The majority of the time Ky is thinking about how he can further please Callie. His character takes on Callie’s mannerisms and seems to lack a personality of his own. Sure, the author delves into his history and gives him a background, but I wanted to learn more about this drop-dead “ky-mazing” guy.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Although Callie’s family wasn’t the best of families, they were realistic and I liked and hated that aspect of the book; I was upset that Callie’s mother never took up for her when Callie and her father were having arguments, I was disgusted with the fact that Callie’s father went to such lengths to get his daughter to forget her pain instead of dealing with it head-on, and I was sympathetic when Callie’s parents had to make the hardest decision any parent shouldn’t have to make.

The love story was also something I really enjoyed. It contained all the parts of a New Adult romance story that I like reading about; the attraction, the heated scenes, and the conflict that brings both parties to confess their undying love for one another.

Finding Her Way Back wasn’t just predictable and clichéd, but also sounded as if it was someone’s daydream and I, surprisingly, enjoyed every bit of it. It’s your typical New Adult romance book with the mushy gushy parts and heated sexual scenes. It’s the kind of book you read when you want a light story without too many conflicts or when there’s a blackout and the only thing fully charged is your Kindle.
