Prior to about a month ago, I had only associated Kami Garcia with Beautiful Creatures. Then came the opportunity to review Unmarked, so then I learned that Kami Garcia has since written another series, one that I should’ve heard about earlier. Before you read this review, I have two warnings. First, if you’re a fan of Supernatural, do not read Unmarked or Unbreakable, as Supernatural fans have been livid about its remarkable similarities to the show. Secondly, as hinted upon in the previous sentence, Unmarked is the sequel to the first book, Unbreakable. Warnings over. Hopefully you’re still reading this…
Kennedy Walters is not perfect, which is evident especially in the fact that she set a demon free. However, she, along with the other members of the Legion – Alara, Jared, Lukas, and Priest – are working to hunt him down. Add in revelations regarding the Legion and the Illuminati, and you’ve got an action-packed sequel that’s arguably better than the first. Kennedy Walters is running out of time to save the ones she loves most, which leaves her scrambling for the answer to the question she has asked from the beginning: what about her has made her Unmarked?
Twists and turns galore. Read Unmarked after you read Unbreakable, but most importantly, just read Unmarked because it’s full of surprises. Although I sometimes struggled to keep up with the happenings of the novel, I still admire the author’s effort to create a suspenseful book. I haven’t watched Supernatural before, so I can’t say much about its similarity (or lack thereof) to the show. However, I will say that I was audibly gasping at parts, so even if the book’s plot happens to be similar to the show, it’s still worth reading.
Unmarked is cheesy at times when it comes to the romantic aspects, but what YA book isn’t? On the bright side, there are lots of good-looking guys in the novel, so every reader will be able to deal. I’m serious here – the dialogues are occasionally canned and unrealistic, but other than that, Unmarked is super fun. Oh, by the way, did I mention the cute guys who are super heroic? Yes? Well, too bad.
Yeah, I got pretty caught up in the story.
