Imagine a world where all the blue-eyed people are sterilized and thought to be inferior. Kind of crazy, especially given the elevation today’s society apparently gives to blonde-haired, blue-eyed people. Well, if this idea seems interesting, Glitch is the book for you. Glitch has got to be one of the most unique books I’ve read in a while, not just because of the whole eye color aspect. It has a bit of everything: zombies, tree houses, cute boys, time travel, and horses. At times, it was a bit too much to take in, but the fact that Glitch can appeal to every reader is commendable.
Abigail lives in Brighton, a city which isn’t nearly as bright as it may seem. Abigail has always followed the rules, but when an enigmatic guy with striking blue eyes tells her to break the law, what will she do? Abigail may have been a rule-breaker for the past eighteen years, but things are changing. Just who will she become as everything seems to fall apart? Brenda Pandos weaves a story that shows the true impact one’s decisions can have on the future.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the plot. The first half progressed slowly. The author attempted to pack the novel with details that explained Brighton, but I was still confused about its important characteristics. For example, even though Abigail explained it in her narrative quite a few times, I still didn’t know what a Date of Death clock did. The second half of the novel had it all: the zombies, time travel, and action. While I personally thought the latter half was worth the wait, others may not think so. However, on the bright side, almost everything else about the novel is solid.
Note that I said almost everything. IMHO, the romance of Glitch could use some work. I didn’t like how easily Abigail fell in love with most of the male characters. It definitely clashed with her character. Abigail thought that every guy was charming and gentlemanly. She got played by just about everyone, which annoyed the hell out of me. The author seemed to focus too much on the romances. The other male characters didn’t have distinguishable characters, and that’s a huge problem.
The ending is well done. I thought the cliffhanger was great, and I will be reading the sequel for sure! Brenda Pandos is a bestselling author for a reason. I’m glad that the first book I read of her’s turned out to be such a fun read.
