TV Review: Pretty Little Liars 5×07 “Silence of E. Lamb”

Has anyone noticed how the parents of Rosewood never seem to be home? It’s no wonder these girls are getting themselves into constant trouble.

But this week we saw the return of Mrs. Fields, Emily’s mom, and she wants to host an impromptu dinner party for all the girls. Alison is so paranoid that she’s even questioning Mrs. Fields’ intentions, but she’s just being the typical meddling mother.

Sydney becomes more of an important character in this episode even though we still have no idea who she really is, where she came from, or how the heck she’s connected to Jenna! However, it’s evident that she can’t be trusted and she’s one great liar. Clearly, Mona has given her some acting lessons. She’s getting closer to Emily and her harmless act has everyone fooled. She’s the link to get inside information from the girls because they have none of their defenses up when it comes to her. If only they knew she’s part of the Mona army.

Mona is doing her usual great job at messing with people’s minds, mostly Emily’s. Emily has no problem in confronting Mona about the dead rat that was left in Paige’s locker but Mona replies with her usual sarcasm and wit.

Another interesting confrontation that took place this week was between Caleb and Alison. Caleb doesn’t hold back on expressing his distrust of Alison. He really has something against Alison and it probably has to do with the way that she has affected Hannah’s life. He also doesn’t buy anything that comes out of her mouth. It seems like Alison is a little bit thrown off by Caleb and though she doesn’t act like it, she feels threatened enough to go and tattle to Hannah about their confrontation. I’m interested to see more tension between these two.

Caleb is coming from a good place because he just wants Hannah to be free from Alison’s grip, but he definitely needs to let her figure things out on her own. He was giving her some tough love by calling her out on her inability to make her own decisions and it came off a little rude. Ever since Caleb returned he hasn’t been his usual cutie self, but that’s probably because of all that transpired in Ravenswood. I’m hoping they’ll give more insight about that in the following episodes.

However, we can all agree that Hannah isn’t handling things in the best way, and though she’s no longer being Alison’s clone I also don’t believe she’s being herself with this alternative image she has going on. Also, drinking straight vodka at your friend’s dinner party probably isn’t the best idea.

This is the second time we see Drunk Hannah come out to play. I initially thought that Hannah had started drinking because of Caleb’s arrival but it’s really been more about the power struggle she’s having with Alison. Things didn’t go well when Alison suggested that Hannah not get involved with Caleb again. The last thing Hannah wants is to be told what to do, especially by Alison.

The dinner party doesn’t go as great as Emily had hoped for, but Alison doesn’t fail to deliver a moving speech to Emily’s mom about everything that occurred while she was “kidnapped.” But Mrs. Fields doesn’t buy it; you can be a great liar but you can’t beat a mother’s intuition. Besides the fact that Mrs. Fields wanted to see the interaction between Emily and Alison, she’s also been in contact with the police department and everyone’s aware that some things aren’t matching up with Alison’s story. This only means more trouble is coming up ahead.

Aria wasn’t able to make it to the dinner party, as things got pretty interesting on her first day volunteering at Radley. We meet Rhonda who recognizes Bethany’s drawing that Aria had with her.

Rhonda is a pretty angry girl and she also happened to be roommates with Bethany. We see Aria get pretty gutsy when she sneaks into Rhonda’s room and takes the notebook full of drawings that Bethany left behind. The drawings are incredibly revealing. They include portraits of Mrs. D with devil horns and someone being thrown off a building. Toby’s mother coincidently was at Radley and died from a fall from a building. Bethany seems to be connected to a lot more than we expected.

Eddie Lamb is certainly on to Aria’s digging and returns Ezra’s calls to set up a meeting with him. The odd thing is that Eddie never shows up for his meeting with Ezra, which leaves us a little worried. Is it possible that “A” might have gotten to Eddie Lamb? After all, the episode is called “The Silence of E. Lamb.” We’re hoping that “A” didn’t permanently shut him up.

Ezra and Spencer spend some time bonding as they clear all of his research and spy stuff. Spencer borrows a camera from Ezra to spy on Melissa, which seems to be a step forward in her accepting that her sister has a deep secret to hide. I truly have never understood what Melissa’s deal is. The show’s executive producer, Marlene King, revealed that in episode 511 Melissa’s secret will finally be revealed. We can’t wait!

Meanwhile at the brew, Hannah and Caleb finally reunite as they come clean about their feelings for each other. During their time apart both of them have changed drastically but their feelings for each other don’t seem to fade away. When Hannah asks Caleb if he still sees her and he says of course—I died. They’re dysfunctionally perfect for each other and I hope they help each other work out the issues they both have going on.

I think their kiss was probably the sweetest part of this episode since everything else was going down hill.

But, it’s Hannah’s big mouth that could’ve gotten them into deep trouble.

The downside to Hannah’s drunkenness was that it caused her to mention Jenna and New York to Sydney who clearly is a messenger to the “A” team as it’s confirmed by “A”’s text to the PLLs.

“A”’s text also confirms what Spencer’s hidden camera captured—Ali out by the Hastings barn late at night. Ali is up to something and she’s definitely lying about quite a few things. But what else is new?
