I will admit it: I have an unhealthy addiction to all things chick-lit. Yes, even though I know it’s incredibly cliched, contrived, cheesy and crazy (alliteration is awesome), I read countless young adult romance books. That’s the way I roll, apparently. I know, this addiction isn’t exactly laudable. But what the heck, right?
Wrong. My addiction led me to an incredibly cheesy book. And I mean “even Swiss cheese would have trouble reading this book” kind of cheesy. So be scared. Be very, very frightened.
Since Forever Ago stars Riley Benson and Max Fletcher. Riley has just suffered from an incredible breakup with a jerk. Max has always been in love with Riley. So what does he do? He gives “love advice” to an incredibly gullible, absentminded girl. Yup, we’re talking about Riley. (Hey Riley, “gullible” is written on the ceiling!) And then stuff happens, and guess what?! There’s a secret that might tear them apart. Curveball, here we come! Since Forever Ago plays out like that.
It goes like this – if you’re in a good mood and want cute, no-nonsense chick-lit, read Since Forever Ago. After all, there are no random deaths, deadly diseases, or insane plot twists. However, if you’ve woken up on the wrong side of the bed, stay away from Olivia Besse’s novel. As you can tell, I most likely woke up on the wrong side of the bed the day I decided to read Since Forever Ago. Basically, my point is, I kind of exaggerated during the plot. Since Forever Ago is pretty fun to read.
Actually, that’s up to the reader to decide.
The major issue I had with the book was Riley Benson. Unfortunately, I felt that she somehow did not belong in our time. Remember earlier when I said that Riley was gullible? Well, for some reason, she thinks that guys like burping, drinking, and swearing more than that of the stereotypical sailor. In other words, she buys the idea of the stereotypical male. I also felt that Riley was a little whiny at times. It was irritating, to say the least. There were times I wanted to shake her and yell at her about her inability to improve.
However, that’s exactly what “new adults” are like! The author really isn’t to be faulted with that. In this case, Olivia Besse wrote a very realistic, although somewhat cliched novel. If you’re willing to suffer a few eye rolls here or there for a mostly enjoyable story, pick up Since Forever Ago now!
