Marcia Clark offered a great read for all type of genre enthusiasts. There was enough love to keep the romance lovers interested and enough action packed mysterious adventures to keep the suspense lovers intrigued. I have not read a mystery novel I was not able to solve myself halfway throughout the book until now. This story builds up tension by adding secrets to everything going on and having an odd string of murders, rapes, and illegal actions connected to each other through exploitive matters such as blackmail, rape, and illegal pornography.
Rachel Knight is a savvy special unit lawyer whose world revolves around saving lives and finding the truth with her detective friend Baily Keller and Toni by her side. When Rachel and Toni are at a loss from a recent tragedy they need to rely on each other to get through the death of a dear friend and loved co-worker Jack. Since Jack also worked in the small unit each of these women were assigned one of his files to work on shortly after his death. Rachel being one of the best of the unit got the most complex file of the stack. As Rachel works on her special case with Baily through the day at night she uses those connections to also secretly work on Jack’s wrongfully labeled murder/suicide as Rachel suggests to her friends. Therefore Rachel is left creating a stakeout for two cases rather then one all the while being targeted by different gang members that seem to be connected to all the cases she has on her plate in a far-fetched manner.
As Rachel and Baily get closer to solving one of the mysterious conflicts another problem arises that not only adds to the original problem but also sheds light on how many of these issues could be interconnected. Rachel is left dumbfound when she realizes that she can solve more then one case at once but she still might not be able to find out the truth about Jack and his involvement with these particular cases.
Some of the clues just don’t add up which adds a sense of urgency to finish the novel as soon as possible. I fell in love with the characters that time and time again were able to save themselves and connect dots that other’s had easily missed. Throughout the novel I was able to see Rachel as a person with real emotions, feelings, and courage that many protagonists lack nowadays. This is an amazing book and before I was able to catch a breath from this novel I picked up the next Rachel Knight story by Marcia Clark!
