This week’s episode of Beauty and The Beast proved to be the best since its summer return.
Heather, Kat’s sister, returned for a surprise visit at the most terrible time but with the great news of her engagement. The thing is Kat never gives Heather more than 30 seconds of her time. Kat is always running off somewhere either to the precinct or to Vincent’s rescue, and she tends to forget that Heather is literally the only family she has left. We always tend to see Kat as a strong, intelligent detective that has a solution to get out of very tough situations yet we forget how dysfunctional she can be when she’s out of her work. She tends to be either extremely sucked into her job or into Vincent and because of all she’s been through she’s always had an emotional disconnect with her family members as much as she does love them. Heather always seems to bring Kat down to earth as she realizes she has a lot to improve on as a big sister.
Maybe it’s the fact that if Kat spends enough time with Heather, she would feel even guiltier about hiding so many secrets from her.
This time, Kat has all the reasons to be on edge. Gabe is tightening the noose on Kat and he shows in this episode that he absolutely has no boundaries. With every move he makes, it becomes clear this isn’t about protecting Kat. Note to self: don’t date narcissistic ex-beasts who are also your boss.
Gabe has gone to the point of having Kat and Tess suspended. But that’s just the beginning of the awful things he did in this episode which show the unraveling of the beast that Gabe carries within.
Vince and Kat realize that Gabe isn’t playing games—he is deadly serious, literally. So, they devise a plan to use a cold case that involves Gabe to bring to light what Gabe had really done. They are able to track down the witness of Ray Sheckman’s murder. Thankfully, he agrees to identify the killer in a lineup. He was such a nice man it made me feel terrible that he had to witness a beast ripping a man to shreds.

Gabe is not to be underestimated, and he figures out Kat and Vince’s plan. He makes a dangerous and terribly careless plan with Sheckman’s brother who is one shady yet cute guy. Sheckman’s brother obviously wants to revenge on whoever killed Ray, and Gabe assures him that it was Vince. He goes to the extent of promising him a witness—Heather. Yes, Gabe who supposedly loves Kat goes to the extent of offering up Heather as bait to make sure Vincent is captured. He knows that Sheckman won’t keep his promise of not harming her but his rage towards Vincent is greater than any concern for a life that could be lost. Even though that life is the only person that Kat can call family.
All this running around has convinced Kat that she needs to come clean about everything to Heather. However after so much lying when Kat finally does come clean it’s no surprise that Heather assumes Kat is making up crazy stories. I can’t blame her, would you believe your sister if she told you that after 10 years she reunited with the man/beast who saved her when their mother was killed? Yeah, it’s a pretty far fetched story.
Sheckman, as a man who has huge armed weapons hanging on this office wall, obviously knows a thing or two about explosives. He kidnaps Heather in her potential wedding dress and everything and leaves scents behind so that Vincent can track her perfectly. Vincent is captured along with Heather in a cell with a bomb with a 1- minute timer. The only way that Vincent can save them is if he flips his beast mode on. He had to transform right in front of Heather and suddenly Kat’s fairytale stories didn’t seem so unrealistic.

Vincent expectedly saves the day, and Heather can finally understand everything that Kat has been going through alone. It was refreshing to see Kat be able to be open and honest with her sister; I’m sure she can sleep a little better at night now. The return of Heather (Nicole Gale Anderson) was great, she brings a quirky and light mood to the show, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of her throughout the season.
Meanwhile, back in NYPD headquarters, Gabe has no choice but to step into the lineup for the open case that his name has now been attributed. It doesn’t take the witness a minute to point out Gabe as the murderer of Ray Sheckman, and so Gabe is taken into custody. The witness is put into a high-security protection program and unluckily for him Gabe has made bail. As the witness is accompanied by a police officer in a secret hideout hotel, Gabe knocks on the door. He steps in and kills the police officer and threatens testifying against him in court. Except his emotions have gotten much too out of control and he ends up choking this man with his bare hands– without any beast abilities.

Gabe just went way too far. He killed one of his own men and killed a witness with his own hands not bothering to cover up his fingerprints. The thought of having his reputation destroyed led Gabe to tap into his beast past. When he looked into the mirror, he could see his beastly self rising up– but is this metaphorically or could it be happening physically as well? As he choked his newest victim, he had flashbacks of his killing of Ray and the same scratch marks he had on his hand’s veins appeared. So what’s really going on? I guess Vincent is right: once a beast always a beast.
I’m thoroughly enjoying how the writers have been handling Gabe and unveiling all these darker layers to him. We always knew he was a little twisted from when we first met him, but we had all really believed he had become a “good guy”.
It will be interesting to see how Gabe gets out of the deep hole he just dug himself in.
