Well ladies and gentlemen, it has happened. The event that we have been waiting for since the moment we laid eyes on Joffery (Jack Gleeson): The Purple Wedding. And I must say, this episode was very well done. Even though we saw Melisandre (Carice Van Houten) and Stannis (Stephen Dillane)burning some in-laws at the stake or Ramsey Snow(Iwan Rheon) setting some dogs onto a woman, that only took up like the first 10 or so minutes and then it was all focused on the incredibly tense filled wedding. There should be some kind of rule stating that no one should ever attend weddings in Westeros because, as we can see, it never ends well.
When Joffery finally croaked after drinking wine that was poisoned, there are so many speculations about who could have assassinated the evil adolescent. Was it Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), The Queen of Thorns (Diana Rigg), or perhaps even Tywin (Charles Dance)? Earlier in the scene, Joffery cuts up Tyrion’s wedding gift, an extremely rare book about four famous kings, and then pours his wine on him and makes him kneel to him. That seems like a lot of motive to kill him but Tyrion doesn’t seem like the assassinating type. It could have been the Tyrells too. The Queen of Thorns has expressed her dislike of Joffery and the Lannisters in general so she may have found a way to have her granddaughter take the throne. Also, with Oberyn’s(Pedro Pascal) very tense conversation with Cersei (Lena Headey) and Tywin, we already know that he wants revenge on the Lannisters for destroying his family. Even Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) glare at Joffery during the wedding and her escape at the end of the wedding makes her look guilty. So what we know is that the Lannisters have a long list of enemies who would be glad to be rid of them.
But that long list of enemies may have gotten longer with the very awkward skit that Joffery had put on. It was titled “War of the Five Kings” and had dwarves impersonating the five kings. It showed the Tyrells humping Renly Baretheon (which made Loras (Finn Jones) angrily leave the room) and the Lannisters chopping off the Starks’ wolf head off and proceed to hump it as well. It even left Varys ashamed, which is saying a lot.
I want to give major props for Gleeson, Peter Dinklage, and Lena Headey for their superb acting skills in this episode. Gleeson never fails to pull off the sadistic personality but he just shined in this episode especiallu when making Dinklage kneel before him. Dinklage’s look of contempt for someone that he is supposed to call family was so real that I thought he was going to just murder him when he refused to kneel before him. And of course there is Headey. Cersei was never a sympathetic character to begin with but just seeing her face when she’s holding her dead son in her arms makes her sympathize with a mother who just lost her child. However, she’s so filled with rage that she automatically assumed that Tyrion committed the murder and is having him sent to the dungeons to await his fate. This whole episode has been filled with such shocking moments that I can’t wait to see how they will handle Tyrion’s trial in the next upcoming episodes.
Also, major kudos to Sigur Ros and their cameo as the wedding band, and for their great version of “Rains of Castamere”.
