The story follows Dean and Sam Winchester as they begin a hunt to find what killed and destroyed a van of Mexican immigrants at the U.S./Mexican border. They meet Xochi, this badass female hunter, who helps them with their investigation. They want to find a female creature, Borderwalker, who can travel between time dimensions.
This story is supposed to take place in during Season 6, between episodes Caged Heat and Appointment in Samara. Since I haven’t watched the show, I’m unsure what that means. But I still found the story understandable. Most of the book is in Dean’s point of view. He’s the character that I really got to know and understand in this story. Sam seems not to have a big part in this, which I’m assuming follows the direction of the series’ plotline.
My favorite character is Xochi. I’m a sucker for a kickass female girl. If she was a main character in the show, I would definitely tune in and watch. She’s smart and mature. Even though, Dean has a crush on her, it doesn’t take away the fact that she can one up the brothers in almost anything. She’s the main reason I enjoyed this book. I think the author did a great job adding this supporting character into the story.
The overall story is interesting. The pacing is steady enough to keep you reading. Also, the descriptions are well done and intense. It’s a bit gory, but that just adds to the intensity. The question is whether the story makes me interested in watching the show? Meh, not exactly. While I was entertained with this book, I can’t say that Winchester brothers have won me over. I do recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, fun read. I think Supernatural fans will love this book, especially to join their favorite characters on a cool, new adventure.
