The New Directions are in New York City for Nationals, and I know more than one Gleek out there was very excited to see what the kids would sing to win the championship and of course the amazing New York landscape. The opening scene was the emptiest I’ve seen Times Square in MY LIFE lol, but it showed the city of dreams with all of its splendor and the gleeks super excited to go sight-seeing, but OH NO! Mr Schuester tells them they’re on lockdown in their hotel room until they write a song for Nationals. Of course, due to the lack of inspiration that a hotel room can bring, we end up with songs like “My Cup” performed by Brittany, Artie and Puck. This one is better than “My Headband” by Brittany too in a past episode, but yeah, you can tell that the kids couldn’t get any inspiration at all writing about cups and mattresses, so Quinn is the first to step up and make everyone realize that they are un-chaperoned in one of the best cities in the world, and I mean, what better source of inspiration than New York City? We also get a really cute duet between Rachel and Kurt called “For Good”, we can see how far their friendship has come and how they both understand each other. Meanwhile, Quinn goes on some sort of a breakdown and Santana says that a haircut will make her feel better soooo we get short-haired Quinn lol.
As they run around NYC, they sing a tribute song, “New York, New York/New York I Love You” which was cute and we see them in Central Park, Times Square, Lincoln Square etc. On the other hand, as the kids are running through the streets of Manhattan, Mr Schuester is in an empty theater belting out “Still Got Tonight” a.k.a one of Matthew Morrison’s songs from his new album, and he reminisces on the idea of singing in Broadway. And ta-da! Some security from the theater tells Schue that he has seen people sing but he knows Will has it in him to be a great singer. Somehow word gets spread out and Will doesn’t want to tell the kids about his Broadway dreams, but oh no, too late, they already know by the time he barges in the room with 12 pizza boxes. The kids get mad at him at first but he realizes that there is no bigger joy for him than to see them grow and learn about their music so they forgive him and get started in composing their original songs.
In the meantime, Finn wants to ask Rachel out on a date, it finally happens after Puck convinces him that there is no better place than NYC and that it could be very romantic as well. When they get to their restaurant, Rachel notices Patti LuPone, they both get introduced and she says to Rachel to “never give up” in her dreams of singing. After the lovely evening, the couple are walking outside being serenated by Puck, Artie, Sam and Mike to “Bella Notte” which builds up to a kiss that Rachel surprisely rejects.
Time for Nationals! With the songs ready and a little bit of tension between Finn and Rachel they start with their duet “Pretending”, which was very fitting to their current situation, as the song ends the tension is so much that Finn and Rachel end up kissing, and to everyone’s wonder (even Jesse St. James who flew over to see Rachel) that was definitely not scripted. From then, we move to the upbeat “Light Up The World” in which each and every single of the New Directions’ kids gave their heart out on that stage.
To the audience surprise, the kids did not pass to the next round at Nationals, placing 12th place, this makes Santana goes on a rage in Spanish (which was hilarious). I was shocked but at the same time I knew they couldn’t win because then what’s the point of the show for the upcoming seasons you know? If they win so easily then they’re not going to put on any effort on winning the year after etc. So yes, as they head back to McKinley High they are congratulated with a sign that says “Congratulations Glee Club on placing 12th place at Nationals”, and nope they are not sad whatsoever, instead they are happy of how far they’ve made it and ready to keep working. Blaine says the “love” word to Kurt, Sam and Mercedes are together? I did not see this one coming LOL and that’s pretty much about it. A bittersweet finale but it ended on a good note, I’m excited to see what will happen next season, hopefully more guests!
