Last night, the 2011 Billboard Music Awards aired live on ABC. Billboard awards the top selling and most listened-to artists of the past year. So, it’s not surprise that artists like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift walked away with a few awards. Check out our thoughts of the show and its performances, along with the list of last night’s winners, below!
Gaby’s thoughts: Billboard Music Awards have always been just a blip on my radar. I don’t really watch to see the winners; it’s pretty much obvious who will be the winners. Mostly, it’s for the performances. This year, Rihanna opened the show with her hit single, S&M. Unfortunately, a local weather report interruption made me miss most of the performance. But I did get to see her perform with Britney. Was Britney really necessary to the performance? Not really, but it was cool to see her onstage.
As the show went on, other artists performed. Black Eyed Peas gave a typical performance, nothing too surprising. The tribute to Beyoncé was sort of weird. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a great performer and singer, but isn’t a tribute a bit premature? I mean all those people in her tribute video should’ve been getting their own tributes! Beyoncé is still young and has a lot more to offer; she hasn’t lived up to a tribute like that. But I do give her props for thanking the original members of Destiny’s Child. lol Oh and also, she had an AMAZING performance. I may not like “Run this World,” but whoever was the creative director of that performance deserves all of Beyoncé’s Billboard awards.
The rest of the show seemed to drag; I can’t remember much else from last night’s performances. Nicki Minaj’s performance was okay, and Britney Spears’ special “surprise” on stage was pretty lame. She didn’t even dance, and she was STILL lip-syncing. If Britney can’t perform live and/or dance, then she needs to stop recording dance songs, and just do ballads or something, so all she needs to do then is stand still at the mike. The closing show performer was Neil Diamond and he had more energy than her! It’s really disappointing, especially for someone like me, who has supported Britney throughout her entire career.
Overall, the show was okay. Ken Jeong was sort of funny, he had a cool opening number, but everything went downhill from there. I wasn’t impressed with the winners; as expected, they were predictable. Here’s to hoping next year brings a better show.
Lucy’s thoughts: I was actually excited about the show mostly to see Britney perform, but ended up being pretty much dissapointed. I liked it, liked it her perform with Rihanna, but completely loathed her performance with Nicki Minaj. Not only was it unnecessary for Brit to use lip-syncing for like 1 MINUTE, but she didn’t even dance or anything! I was expecting some kind of interaction or dance with Nicki, but nope, nothing. Is this a preview of what the tour is going to be like? Seems like it. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Britney Spears but besides tickets being a little TOO expensive, I guess after seeing other artists in concert (not saying any names) sing, dance, and do everything LIVE and put 3 times the effort she would put, I shall pass this tour.
On the other hand, I guess the highlight of the night was Beyonce, she OWNED the stage and the performance was just amazing, to the point that it made me like “Run The World” a little bit more now. I agree with Gaby with the whole tribute being a little premature but I love Beyonce since her Destiny’s Child era and she is an inspiration for young women out there *claps* you go Honey B.
Other performance that caught my attention was Cee-Lo Green’s floating piano, I was legit scared for not only his life but that glittery piano!! lol. The Mary J. Blige and Lil Wayne song was good too, now that I see Weezy performing I cannot wait until Tha Carter IV comes out! In the meantime, I just want to point out that Will.i.am thanking technology was just hilarious, I mean really? LOL. I wish we could still listen to the funy BEP from “Monkey Business” not the extra autotuned they sound like now.

I’m not even going to mention my thoughts on Country artists performance or awards because I’d flip the channel at that point to watch the Heat vs Bulls game (LETS GO HEAT!), I’m sorry to all the Young Folks out there! I just can’t seem to like country unless is a very pop-ish style like “Need You Know” or any Taylor Swift song basically, whom by the way won again and I was not surprised at all. What did surprise me however, was the cuteness of the kiss between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez! Both looked adorable.
Neil Diamond closed the show performing “Sweet Caroline” and it was really cute! The guy CAN perform live! (Take notes on that Brit-Brit!)
Ken Jeong was funny, not as much as I expected but I mean after Queen Latifah hosted the American Music Awards I think pretty much anyone can host an awards show.
