Film Review: ‘Bridesmaids’ is good, but don’t let the hype fool you

Bridesmaids is good. Not amazing, not great, not terrible nor bad. There is so much positive hype surrounding this movie. Therefore, when I went to see it, I had high expectations, and I was let down a bit. It’s very funny, and laughs are guaranteed throughout film. Yet, overall, I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the comedy.

The movie begins with an enthusiastic and sort of funny sex scene. Maybe not the best way to introduce Kristen Wiig’s character, but it does give you a little insight into her character, Annie. Annie is pretty directionless; her small business has failed, her love life is lacking, and her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), is getting married. The first half of the movie isn’t as fun as the second half. Annie is dealing with her insecurities and rivalry with Lillian’s new friend Helen (Rose Byrne). It sort of makes the film drag. But it starts to pick up in the middle, during a hilarious scene on the airplane. That’s when I was reminded of why I like Kristen Wiig. From that point on, I started to really enjoy the movie.

The bridesmaids are a funny assortment of ladies. But Melissa McCarthy is truly the scene stealer. The “manliest” of them all, McCarthy is the one who delivers her lines at perfect comedic timing. She’s the one that male audiences will love. Because frankly, without her, I’m almost positive this movie would have been written off as another typical chick flick.

Much of the hype is saying this movie isn’t just for women, but for guys too. While the raunchy humor will appeal to men, the story and situations are more female-oriented. During my screening, the women and men in the audience sometimes laughed at different things. However, I will say that I consider this movie the most guy-friendly chick flick to come out in a while… or ever.

I do recommend seeing Bridesmaids if you’re looking for a funny comedy. Is it a must-see? Not really. And it’s not a movie I’d care to see again. My best advice, if you do go see it, is to not let all the hype influence you! Go with an open mind, expecting anything. It may not live up to the hype, but you’re bound to have a fun and enjoyable time watching it.
